Bootleg ColecoVision Galaxian on Ebay, Beware!

Recommended Posts

I just ran across an auction for the rare ColecoVision Galaxian on Ebay. Normally the Atarisoft product for the ColecoVision would be in an Atarisoft case (no ridges at the top of the sides of the cartridge) and the label would be in 2 pieces (front face label, and top label). This cartridge appears to be in a Coleco cartridge case with a 1 piece label that rolls over the front corner from the face to the top. My guess is that it's a reproduction, so be weary of spending hard earned dollars for this *RARE* look-a-like!

There's a good eye for detail doubledown - I wouldn't have caught that one (I would have glanced at it for 1/2 second and returned to the search). I suppose someone would take a chance but I wouldn't settle for less than the Atarisoft version. I've got 2 Atarisoft Galaxian carts and they're among my most treasured classics.

Looks like an Atarisoft case to me, is it worth faking a $15-$20 R4 cart?

Atarisoft cases do not have single labels (like an activision 2600 cart) They use a single face label with an end label. This auction is obviously a bootleg.

I would venture to guess that the guy bought it for a decent amount of money not knowing that it was a bootleg, and still may not know that it's a bootleg.

Why in the hell would someone include all of the game playing instructions in the auction? The points for killing the aliens? Seems a bit out of context.

Is that why his pictures are so fuzzy?

To take a contrary position, it's not much of a look-alike ... anyone who can't spot this for what it is would have to be terribly, terribly new to collecting.

They seem to be selling for around $25.00 - $60.00 loose.
That $60 high-end strikes me as a bit too high, even for eBay, for this title. I have seen an overseas bidder get maliciously run up on a boxed copy of the game, but I don't recall the cartridge alone fetch a $50+ price in recent history.

Perhaps I missed an auction somewhere, but the range given is bit too generous.

Auction ended early...wonder if the seller is a member here and saw this thread, or if someone told them its fake.

I made a bunch of repro carts for Pac-Man, Dig Dug and Joust in CV shells using authentic looking Atarisoft labels that wrapped around the cart like that. Would have been nice to use actual Atarisoft carts, but they aren't terribly common so that wasn't really an option. I was charging $25 for these at the time.

It's a little different though Al as you were selling advertised "reproduction" carts of unreleased prototypes, not selling an obivious bootleg as *RARE*.

Nah ... it's back with a vengeance.

Well, looks like the seller removed the "Rare" bits from the title and auction description.

Who said "collecting" has anything to do with it? :ponder:

Repro's are just quite fine for people who only care about having a real cart to play on real hardware for the exclusive purpose of just being able to play a game they want to play.

With that, the issue is that this seller isn't clear about it being a repro. Either doesn't know, or does and is just trying to pass it off as original to get more money. Either way, false representation on their part.

I don't quite follow you're opening line; collecting has everything to do with knowing what you're getting.

Anyone who wants a "playable" is better off shopping for label damaged carts, as they're usually far, far cheaper.

And, in the case that the seller doesn't know better, it wouldn't be false representation, just simple ignorance. There is a possible world where even the seller doesn't know it isn't an original manufacturer's run of the game, or that it could be anything but.

This game is not rare at all. It sells for cheap, like $5-$8 max. It's less common than Centipede and Defender but I wouldn't say rare. The only rare Atarisoft game was Jungle Hunt. Why bother "bootlegging" such a common game?

You show me where one can obtain Galaxian for $5-$8 ... it is more common than Jungle Hunt, but not to that degree.

Total non-answer ... I cannot for the life of me recall the last time Galaxian (cartridge only, sound cosmetic condition) sold on eBay for less than $20, including shipping, unless it was a BIN.

Yeah it averages about $20 bucks easily. Unless like you said theres a cheap bin, or it ends on a Sunday. Galaxian is not uber rare, but its hard to find and would never go for under $10.
