liveinabin #1 Posted January 21, 2002 Good find mate! That's the original and totally best version of Braben and Bells masterpiece. Yeah, get yourself a BBC, you have the killer app for it already. Welcome Commander Jameson
Fretwobbler #2 Posted January 22, 2002 It also contained a decent original boxed copy of Driller(for the speccy this time) - only trouble is the fold-up cardboard planet thing is missing, the Elite on the other hand is perfectly mint in every way. "Braben and Bell" - now there a two names you only hear of together in court rooms these days. All over an emulation rom for a commercially dead product as well. If the things ive read on the web on true I thank the lord everyday that Braben never worked for Atari or Activision. Its a shame really because they really did write a blinder. I reckon that if you rate games on what they achieve from the hardware available there will never be anything to ever come close to achieving what Elite did. To this day I am still amazed how they could fit the game in the memory of a system like a BBC or a speccy. 2040 planets?!?!?!? How many variables and stuff for each planet?!!?!!? Thats one of the problems with todays software I reckon - too much resource available - while this is a generaly a good thing it can lead to lazy programming. Fretwobbler #3 Posted January 22, 2002 Last Friday I bought a box of Speccy games at a cheapo auction for £6.00. Nothing special about that. I got home Friday evening and began rooting through the 30 or so crappy games to see what was there and down at the bottom of the crate of games I saw a sleek black box with the golden wings on the cover - Wicked I thought - Ive just bought an original copy of Elite in mint condition for next to nothing. Nothing too special abot that either though, until just now when - I opened the box for the first time and picked up the manual and began flicking through it only to read the 3rd page and see the sentance - "ELITE - for the BBC Micro Programmed by Ian bell..........blah blah" Nice! All I need now is a BBC to play the thing on. Adam
liveinabin #4 Posted January 23, 2002 It truly is a stunning, awesome acheivement. Though I must admit that Braben and Bells masterwork does get relegated to 'stupid piece of dumb crap!' whenever i try to dock
