Classic game books

Recommended Posts

This is kind of a dumb question but i figured i'd ask anyway. Does anyone know of any other game books that kinda describe some of the games in video game history? An example of what im talking about is that Arcade Fever book by...uh, i cant remember his name but i got the book from my local bookstore. Something along those lines was kinda what i was hoping to get. Did they ever come out with a sequel of that book or is there something else that i can get along the same lines? anything at all? Thanks.

Sure! Aside from Arcade Fever there are a number of present day books regarding various aspects of video game history such as:

Electronic Plastic

Supercade

Ultimate History of Video Games

Zap! The Rise and Fall of Atari

Generally you can find even more similar books at Amazon by looking at the "Customers who bought this book also bought" list on the bottom.

I like all of them but my all time favorites are the OLD videogame books such as "Invasion of the Space Invaders" by Martin Amis etc.

Thanks for the info! i appreciate it. What is in that Space Invaders book you were talking about? I checked amazon for a description of it but all i saw was the price for a used copy was 225 bucks! Just wondering for more info on that one! thanks!

Actually, I've scanned a number of pages for that book (The middle arcade section). So I can email the link to them if you'd like. (I'd rather not post the url here as it's on a friends server).

However, your email address here seems to be invalid or blocked.

YOu name it they have it here.. modern age books good concise reviews and its an amazon.com storefront so you know its safe reliable and of the top quality.

And if you buy them through that link, we get a small percentage of the sale, which helps us pay for the costs associated with running AtariAge (and unfortunately we're well into the red.. )

Did somebody say CLASSIC VIDEO GAME BOOKS???

Please check out the scans of my collection here, I have about 40 or 50 books in my collection, not to mention the scans of the magazines too. There are also a bunch of the newer books mentioned below as well. Feel free to ask me about the contents of any of those, if you are interested.

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT: I just completed my Electronic Games Magazine collection, just got my hands on ISSUSE #1, which was the last one I needed. I now have them ALL, including the Buyers Guide and the 2 Software Encyclopedia's.

NE146 - the Martin Amis book you mentioned is one of the few I still DON'T have in my collection, yet. Hard to justify the price of that one selling for a few hundred dollars most of the time. I did thumb through a copy at the library though, and it would make a nice addition to my collection, someday!

Nice page MrRetroGamer

I too love old game books and magazines and have a pretty respectible collection. However, since all of them were bought during their time (and since I was in anywhere from 10-15 years old), many of them are quite beaten up with the majority of my magazines missing their covers heheh

As far as the Martin Amis book I was taken by surprise at how much Amazon is charging for it as that's just unbelievable. Personally I had a hard enough time swallowing $70 a book during college (don't let my hastily typed run-on sentences fool you) let alone anything above for a videogame book. Interestingly enough, my local library has a pretty decent copy as well. I got my copy when I was a kid and I asked my dad who was traveling to pick up for me any videogame mags/books he'd find at the bookstores which he did

By the way in regards to your page, I'd LOOOVE to see is more scans of the actual contents of some of those mags and books, that'd rock!

Don't forget Phoenix:The Fall and Rise of Videogames by Leonard Herman. It chronicles the history of videogames from the early days to the year 2000. You can find out more by visiting the following web page:

http://www.rolentapress.com

It breaks the history of videogames on a year by year basis so that you can get a sense of how things occured over the course of several years and it has a lot of pictures!
