SomeGuyWithDSL #1 Posted April 5, 2006 I'm 25, and I've been out of the portable gaming scene since I got my GameBoy Pocket on launch day. I couldn't stand it any longer when saw the DS Lite ... it matched my iBook. I managed to Buy One Now on eBay for 15% over JP retail with free shipping from another guy here in Texas. Not too bad. It should be here tomorrow. Anyway, I now need some DS game recommendations. My portable gaming preferences are quick, simple, on-the-go titles. That usually boils down to puzzle, platformer, and sports genres. The "out there" games of the DS interest me, too, like Electroplankton and Wario Ware (loved it on the GameCube). As an old GameBoy owner, the new Tetris DS looks like a must-buy for me, as does the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Any help from those of similar tastes? I thought the old folks at the AtariAge home would be the perfect ones to ask!
+legeek #2 Posted April 5, 2006 I have to recommend Pac'n Roll. "If you like Pac-Man and Marble Madness, you'll love Pac'n Roll!" Plus it has the original Pac-Man as an unlockable (covering both screens). Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is also excellent. In my mind it's one of the top three Castlevanias, up there with Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night... Cheers, Ben
figgler #3 Posted April 5, 2006 Judging by your like for the old school and the quick and dirty, I'd recommend Feel the Magic for starters. It's basically Sega doing Wario Ware and has that great Sega charm showcasing each of the DS's capabilities. Plus it's cheap. Tetris also you will like and I'd say try Meteos too. I'm pretty into Princess Peach right now and since you like platformers, you can't do much better on the DS right now
SomeGuyWithDSL #4 Posted April 5, 2006 I'd recommend Feel the Magic for starters. Thanks. Any experience with The Rub Rabbits!, its sequel?
figgler #5 Posted April 5, 2006 Actually i'm not even convinced it exists. I quite literally have never even seen it once in any store. What's up with that?
AtariJr #6 Posted April 5, 2006 I have Rub Rabbits and its very similar to Feel the Magic... more games, and slightly updated graphics... like mario party, if you love it buy the sequel (but this time you dont have the sell the prequell cuase its not useless lol) I would have to recommecnd Trauma Center... heck even my mom plays it... where else can you do sergery?! lol Animal Crossing is good for the non gamer, so might be up to your style. Mario Kart is classic, so thats a def, so is Mario 64 Nano stray is classic 3d (but over head view) shooter action and is a blast Metroid Hunters is great, but not for old school gamers, has a slight learning curve on the controlls Like others said, Meteos is great, so is Fell the Magic, and I actually liked Asphault Urban despite the reviews (its realy beautiful) GAMES TO STAY AWAY THAT SUCK IN CLASSIC GAMERS!!!: Space Invaders Revolution: its space invaders........yay (we all have it already, not worth the price for the "upgrade" Atari Classics Retro: The biggest disappointment and an example of why Atari is bankrupt.... n8littlefield #7 Posted April 5, 2006 Tetris DS. It's amazing. Online is great (and this is from someone that normally does not do online). Also, if you are willing import, Ouendan is REALLY fun and is definately good for a quick pick up and go game. If you like old adventure games, Phoenix Wright was recently reprinted and is worth buying. Other than those, if you like strategy games, you really can't do better than the DS. Age of Empires, Battles of Prince of Persia and Advance Wars are all worth owning.
SomeGuyWithDSL #8 Posted April 5, 2006 Metroid Hunters is great, but not for old school gamers, has a slight learning curve on the controlls Thanks for all the recommendations so far, folks. I'm not stuck in the past, that's just how I typically like my portable games. I've been updating every generation with home consoles, including standing in line on 11/22 for an Xbox 360. Maybe the DS will be the one that updates my portable tastes to something more sophisticated, or maybe I'll fall in love with something like Meteos and be asking this same question in 5 years when I make my next portable purchase. sega saturn x #9 Posted April 6, 2006 There's lots of puzzle games on the DS such as bust a move, puyo pop, mr driller, meteos and more I can't remember. Also don't forger yoshis touch and go and kirbys canvas curse.
NE146 #10 Posted April 6, 2006 Tetris DS & Mario Kart. Those 2 are power packed value imho. Otherwise I'd say don't forget the GBA games and pick up Wario Ware Twisted.. yes it works great on the ds
okto #11 Posted April 6, 2006 I couldn't stand it any longer when saw the DS Lite ... it matched my iBook. I managed to Buy One Now on eBay for 15% over JP retail with free shipping from another guy here in Texas. Not too bad. It should be here tomorrow. That's an incredible deal. TEXAS REPRESENT. Tetris DS, for sure. Bomberman DS is good and can be gotten for cheap. MarioKart is an incredibly fun, quick game online or off. Mr. Driller...enh. It's good, it just didn't really hold my attention (and it gets hard REALLY fast). Metroid Prime: Hunters is a brilliant game, but it's not very "grab a quick game" suitable. However... Metroid Prime Pinball is PRECISELY that kind of game. It's the best video game pinball out--better even than Space Cadet (the one that came with Win95). And it comes with a Rumble Pak, which is cool. It's like a scaled-down version of the "kawping" feel of the bumpers on a real pinball table. Trauma Center is good too. Good balance of frustrating and fun, and each surgery lasts less than 5 minutes.
keilbaca #12 Posted April 6, 2006 Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is also excellent. In my mind it's one of the top three Castlevanias, up there with Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night... I completely agree with that. Mario Kart is awesome, but people snake way too often on the game, so its no longer fun online. Another vote for Nanostray. its badass, hard (but not as hard as Ikaruga), and a lot of fun. Definitely took a lot of time from my hands. I can't afford any new games right now, but as soon as I do, I'm so getting Tetris DS. Online tetris FTW!
compacho #13 Posted April 7, 2006 I'd say pick up Super Princess peach. Great gumbo of every mario.
ninjarabbit #14 Posted April 7, 2006 I'll put in a vote for Advance Wars: Dual Strike and Animal Crossing: The Wild World. I've played Animal Crossing every day since I got it for Christmas and Advance Wars I think is the the best strategy war game period.
SomeGuyWithDSL #15 Posted April 7, 2006 Well, this morning I picked up Tetris DS, as well as Yoshi's Touch N Go and Pac N Roll. After an initial play, they all seem like good solid games. Pac N Roll has got to be similar to the DS Super Monkey Ball ... how does it compare? I think Age of Kings or Advance Wars DS is up next on my purchase list. Thanks for all your help so far. SomeGuyWithDSL #16 Posted April 7, 2006 Oh, and I haven't taken Tetris DS online yet. NO WPA SUPPORT in the DS, which the rest of my network is running at the moment, and NO MAC OS SUPPORT for the direct-to-DS USB wireless bridge. Gah. Time to check on the neighbors
NE146 #17 Posted April 7, 2006 NO WPA SUPPORT in the DS, which the rest of my network is running at the moment I actually friggin converted mine from WPA to WEP specifically for the DS.. call me nuts
n8littlefield #18 Posted April 7, 2006 Tetris DS has basically lived in my DS since I bought it. I practically had to force myself last night to take it out so I could finally try to finish off a few of my other games. Playing over the internet is great - although I played push mode last night and it took me 10 rounds to find someone who was actually a challenging opponant which is frustrating. Atarifever #19 Posted April 7, 2006 Well, this morning I picked up Tetris DS, as well as Yoshi's Touch N Go and Pac N Roll. I think Yoshi TaG is awsome. It's the best game I've played in awhile.
compacho #20 Posted April 8, 2006 If you like Yoshi's TaG, then Kirby's canvas curse will extend that grin u currently have.
gulag picture radio #21 Posted April 13, 2006 The Wario Ware games are all great (though Wario Twisted felt like it went by too fast for me...). I also like Pac-Pix which is an interesting recontextualization of Pac-Man, if that's not too "arty" of an assesment. i've seen this new at Toys R Us for $10, along with games like Polarium (puzzle game) and Feel the Magic (very stylish and tons of fun).
