JB #1 Posted April 9, 2006 http://revolution.ign.com/articles/699/699647p1.html The Joy of Painting is being made into a video game. WHY?
SteveW #2 Posted April 9, 2006 Starscream in another thread was asking what kinds of new games could be made for the Revolution because of it's controller. This is a perfect example. It could be pretty interesting. It's just odd that they put out a game about Bob Ross, since he died years ago. But then, the guy could make a painting with just a putty knife, and now you can make one with nothing but a wireless remote controller. And probably share them with people online. Vic George 2K3 #3 Posted April 10, 2006 Would a modern version of Mario Paint be out of the question for a Revolution game?
+remowilliams #4 Posted April 10, 2006 Yeah, I was pretty sure that he went to the happy trees in the great beyond a while back. Odd. Video painting might be kind of a neat app though.
ninjarabbit #5 Posted April 10, 2006 This might be one of the more brilliant things I've seen in awhile.
keilbaca #6 Posted April 10, 2006 *awaits Starscream Nintendo bashing* This is a decent idea, a good way to pass the time and relax. it would be awesome, if we got his commenting as you painted. "Right here, you can put a couple happy little trees." hehehehe
+remowilliams #7 Posted April 10, 2006 it would be awesome, if we got his commenting as you painted. "Right here, you can put a couple happy little trees." hehehehe Yeah, it would be weird to hear him comment from beyond the grave on my crappy paintings. It just HAS to have a packin brown 'fro wig for your Rev though!
JB #8 Posted April 10, 2006 Starscream in another thread was asking what kinds of new games could be made for the Revolution because of it's controller. This is a perfect example. It could be pretty interesting.\Except paint programs aren't a new idea. Same genre, new and improved interface. Which is what Starscream was saying in that thread. It's just odd that they put out a game about Bob Ross, since he died years ago. But then, the guy could make a painting with just a putty knife, and now you can make one with nothing but a wireless remote controller. And probably share them with people online. I think the point was it's still a recognized brand. It also appeals to non-gamers in a way that "Mario Paint" doesn't, as well as implying a bit more in-depth experience(Mario Paint was many things, but a reasonable simulation of painting wasn't one of them). And if it includes captures from the TV series, it goes beyond Mario Paint by offering lessons instead of just dropping you in front of the tools and saying "here, draw something." Would a modern version of Mario Paint be out of the question for a Revolution game? It's slated for DS last I heard. They might make a Rev one too, though. sega saturn x #9 Posted April 10, 2006 Seems neat enough, not really a buy though.
compacho #10 Posted April 10, 2006 How precise can you be on a REV remote 8 feet away? This is perfect for the DS though.
JB #11 Posted April 10, 2006 How precise can you be on a REV remote 8 feet away? This is perfect for the DS though. As precisely as you can move your arm.
liveinabin #12 Posted April 10, 2006 Bleurghh! I hate Bob Ross. I remember when I used to work in an art supplies store in about 97 and we weren't allowed to tell the f***wits that bought his overpriced crap that he was dead. So, of course, I told everyone. Even if they didn't ask.
Atarifever #13 Posted April 10, 2006 I linked there and got an example of why those ads that are always right in the top right corner of IGN articles are not always a good idea. When I opened the link the headline read: "Bob Ross Paints on Revolution" and right below it, loooking for all the world like a picture from the game, was a picture from "Commando's Strike Force". The guy in the picture is getting ready to snipe something and the overall effect is that it looks like the most kick ass paintball game ever.
darklord1977 #14 Posted April 10, 2006 give it up nintendo , with the lame painting games
sega saturn x #15 Posted April 10, 2006 Ummmm...this isn't being made by nintendo.
Mindfield #16 Posted April 10, 2006 Slightly OT: Okay... why the hell is this guy noted for his "happy little trees?" I've been hearing that for several years now, and every time I hear it I think of a similar painting show they used to show on WNED (a Buffalo PBS station) with another painter, some balding German(?) guy whose name I can't remember, and his schtick was always "Happy little trees" and "a happy little stream" and so on. NovaXpress #17 Posted April 10, 2006 "Happy trees" was BR's most famous slogan. It even carried over into a runnin MTV gag. He died about 15 years ago, maybe his replacement tried to steal his schtick. This is a genius license if it ever comes to light. BR is the best character to stir press attention for a painting game. Mindfield #18 Posted April 11, 2006 (edited) "Happy trees" was BR's most famous slogan. It even carried over into a runnin MTV gag. He died about 15 years ago, maybe his replacement tried to steal his schtick. This is a genius license if it ever comes to light. BR is the best character to stir press attention for a painting game. Actually, the guy I remember ran his painting series in the early 80s (we're talking '82-84 or so here). He'd knock out a complete nature scene in one half hour episode using various brush and pallette knife techniques 'n stuff -- he was actualy quite good (apparently as good as Bob here), but the guy i'm thinking of is, as I said, a balding European guy, German I think given that he spoke with a pronounced accent. An older guy, probably in his 50s or 60s at that time. My dad used to watch it all the time and I usually watched it with him (for no better reason than that he had the cable converter). I just recall that all his "happy little" descriptions of things he was painting at the moment. Buggered if I can remember his name, and I couldn't begin to figure out the proper Google Fu for this. EDIT: Alexander! His name was Alexander. Not sure if it was his first or last name, but I'm thinking first. Edited April 11, 2006 by Mindfield
NovaXpress #19 Posted April 11, 2006 You're talking about Bill Alexander. He never said "happy little trees." Your memories are getting mixed. It's happened to me too.
jpfalcon2003 #20 Posted April 11, 2006 Not my type of game, but it would be interesting to check it out playing the store display of it.
Shaggy the Atarian #21 Posted April 11, 2006 I'm more partial to "happy little clouds" myself. While this isn't the first choice for what I would get on my Revolution, I am curious as to how it will be implemented. I almost wonder if it will follow a pattern similar to what a group of students did in Japan where they developed software that teaches people how to draw by allowing the player to follow a master artists hand on a screen. Pretty cool stuff really.
Mindfield #22 Posted April 13, 2006 You're talking about Bill Alexander. He never said "happy little trees." Your memories are getting mixed. It's happened to me too. Ah-HA! William Alexander. That was him. And he did use "happy" quite frequently (one cite here). I rememered this because to this day I've never seen Bob Ross paint anything, which is why the whole "happy trees" thing triggered the memory -- I thought it was the same guy. After further research, this Wiki entry for William Alexander shows that Bob Ross was one of his disciples, so it looks like Ross got his whole "happy trees" thing from Bill. moycon #23 Posted April 14, 2006 I'm thinking this is Bullshit. EGM had the same thing in it's subscriber game creations in last months issue. It's a monthy blurb where people send in their outlandish fake games. That doesn't prove it's fake for sure, but has anyone else dug up any information regarding this?
