Sega CD hooked to a Genesis 1

this may be a stupid question, but i just got my first sega cd console a couple of hours ago and haven't done much investigating yet. How do you switch back and forth between the sega cd 2 and the genesis 1. The sega cd automatically loads up and tries to find a disc, but i just want to go straight to the cartridge in the genesis.

there is no "switching" between the two - if you have a cartridge in the cart slot, it should automatically override the SegaCD. It sounds like the port might be a little dirty.
