Australian power supply for 2600 (jr? rainbow?)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Forgive my "lack of the lingo" as I'm not entirely sure of specific models etc.

I have 2 consoles which I believe are the 2600 Junior (with the flat black casing with silver/rainbow trim):

I don't have either power supplys or tv/rf cable connectors for them. I'm in Australia so we're on 240V, but don't know what the console power requirements are - are there generic power adaptors I can buy or is this Atari specific.

And I have no idea about what to use to connect it to the TV..

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Yup, those are Atari Jrs alright. But if you have no power supplies or TV cables, how did you take that picture!?

Anyhow, the power adaptor you need is:

input: AC 240V, 50Hz, 8W

output: DC 9V, 500mA

The TV cable you need is 3C-2V 75 Ohm Coaxial Cable. It plugs straight into your aerial socket.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

@accousticguitar:

Thanks, I did stumble across that site a few days ago but lost patience searching and navigating, awful web design! Will try again.

@dark-aleph:

Where I bought the units from took the pictures (using a power supply from a borrowed unit they claimed), so I am half suss as to whether they work or not, therefore a bit hesitant on making a big investment on sourcing power supplies!

Thanks for that info, thats exactly what I was after. The power adaptor uses a 3.5mm tip as opposed to the plug-type that is used these days?

Now I have happened to pick up a 2600/VCS (pic below) with all cables which should arrive in a few days, will I be able to use its power adaptor to test out the Junior units?

@rheffera:

That would be unreal!

New Question - as a kid I had one of those old Hanimex pong-clone units, a ZX81 etc, and I remember having a RF switch, a black box with just "TV" and "GAME" written on it so you didn't have to keep unpluging things. Can you get these today? With multiple RF inputs? As I amass a collection of my youth I'd like to save fragile cables from plugging and unplugging. Most of what I have collected so far have the hard wired TV (RF or two pronged thingy) cable plug.

I have one of the old "game/tv" switches.

No idea if they make them anymore. Maybe check the Dick Smith, Tandy and Jaycar websites?

These days multi A/V switches are the go. Theoretically, you could hack up a couple of adaptors.

Or, easier still - you can cheaply buy Y-adaptors which allow 2 aerial inputs for one output.

I see.. I'm probably dreaming to be able to find some sort of multiple-input RF switch right? I've got about 5 old "RF only" consoles (mainly the old "TV Game" late-70s type, with built in games only) so far with more coming, and delicate cables on them. Would piggybacking a bunch of Y adaptors work?

Will do a search for a more elegant solution..

Can't see myself hacking anything up, except maybe the ends of my fingers! Already have various A/V switches, AV transmitters/receivers hooked up to TVs, PCs and Xboxes at my place, last thing I want is my poor electrical skills blowing something up..

I'm so foolish!

I had a power supply all along. So now I've got 2 Juniors and a regular CVS.

I've also recently picked up a Master System, 3 Mega Drives, an Astro Wars, 6 different "TV Tennis" type consoles (3 Hanimex, 3 other brands, 2 are cartridge based), and something else I'm not sure.

What are people doing with their collections (that are still working) so sticky little fingers of nephews and visitors tots don't get into them? I'd like to have them out and viewable/playable, but not for descructive little brats.

I was thinking perhaps construction of some sort of unit, with a Perspex (acrylic sheet) front or top that can be hinged and locked. Will probably need room for 10 consoles now and up to 15 in the future.

Anyone got ideas or current implementations? My games room is 12metres by 6metres in total so I'm not lacking in space.

Cheers!
