charin #101 Posted January 20, 2005 My favorites, in no particular order: Atari 2600 Colecovision Intellivision MSX and MSX2 Commodore 64 ZX Spectrum PC Engine / TG16 Sega Saturn Mega Drive Nokia N-Gage (my newest gaming system) N-Gage has no much good games, but it has nice features for the price. Missing an Atari emulator for it. MSX is pratically unknown in the US, has a lot great games like the original Metal Gear. sku_u #102 Posted January 20, 2005 Lumping the XBOX in with CD-I, Channel F, and 32X suggests to me that you haven't played any XBOX games in HDTV with a nice sound system. There's really no comparison to any other current system, with the possible exception of the GameCube, except XB's sound is better and has more games-- particularly Sega exclusives. Seeing as you've already made up your mind, I won't proselytize further except to suggest that you're really missing out on some good stuff. I've played all 4 of the modern consoles in HDTV with a dts surround system. I used to own an Xbox. The reason I included it on the list is that the hardware is unreliable (had to replace the system a few times), its too much like a computer and not enough like a console, the game library is small compared to the Gamecube, PS2, and Dreamcast and there are not enough exclusives and too much shovelware. If Microsoft decided to enable backwards compatability with the nextbox and continued to develop quality titles for it, my opinion would likely change. As it stands, it looks like Xbox will be an orphaned system when nextbox comes out.
Lost Monkey #103 Posted January 20, 2005 No Order is real, just implied: 1. Atari 2600 VCS 2. TurboDuo 3. Saturn 4. Dreamcast 5. Gamecube 6. Atari 7800 7. Neo Geo Pocket 8. Master System 9. NES 10. SNES Since we are coming up on the 3rd anniversary of the original post, I thought I would look at my original list and see what has changed... I'm not as fond of the GCN or the 7800 as I was but since no other systems have wormed their way in to take their places, I'll keep the list as it is.. Carry on. Actually, The X-Box has more proprietary software than GC and there are more multi-platform games that are on the X-Box and not the game cube than vice versa. As far as reliability, I've had no problems with any of the current 3, but my friend's experience with the PS2 has been nothing short of a nightmare. The only one that I've had any trouble with is the Dreamcast. But that's the thing, everybody's gonna have a different experience and tell a different story. As far as the X-Box being like a PC. I like that. It's easier to work with that way, and when it comes to gaming, the X-Box has never felt like a computer to me, it feels like any other console (except that you don't have any reasonable fear of running out of space to save your data.) As far as HD, I think the X-Box is the only one actually capable of 1080i. I think the GC is capable of 720p and I'm not sure if the PS2 is also, or if it's just 480p, but they can all surpass the previously unsurpassed in a console, 480i. Still, that's not a huge consideration for me right now, cause it'll be some time before I get a TV that is capable of more than 480i.
Mr_8bit_16bit #105 Posted January 20, 2005 I forgot to add in my last post: X-Box has more proprietary games, but in my opinion, the Game Cube has better ones. (Fellow Halo 2 fans put your hands down!)
DracIsBack #106 Posted January 20, 2005 I forgot to add in my last post: X-Box has more proprietary games, but in my opinion, the Game Cube has better ones. (Fellow Halo 2 fans put your hands down!) I agree. I own both. For games that are on both platforms, I typically get the XBox version. But for original games, I play the Cube a lot more. Now if only that Katamari Damnacy game was on either ...
Mr_8bit_16bit #107 Posted January 21, 2005 I think the GC has the best propriatary games of all the new systems. The problem is it has the fewest multi-platform games. The GC is overlooked a lot more often than the PS2 or the XB. For those of us who have all three, that's no big deal, but for the guy who can only afford one or two of the systems, that may turn them away from the cube. Atariboy2600 #108 Posted January 24, 2005 I just picked up that EGM mag that talks about there Top 10 consoles and it seem we jump the gun here and this is what they said on there page, "The hit parae toward EGM's 200th issue cintinues this month with another painfully controversial ranking: the top 10 consoles we'ev covered over the past 16 years (based on their game libraries, not stuff like DVD playback, backwards compatibilly, etc.). Fights have already broken out in the office lunchroom over this list---check out EGM's message board to join the fray" Well now we know why the 2600 was not on there "top 10 list" cuase at the time the 2600 was long dead in the market as the mag was out:P

rxd #110 Posted January 24, 2005 the Tandy coco? Ah bless. My girlfriend had one of those,.. or rather, she had the original incarnation of it - Yes, the CoCo was originally the Dragon 32 - the most famous (and probably only) computer to hail from Wales!! I used to love Roller Controller for the CoCo3. In fact I had all 3 models of the CoCo and had a blast with them all. But I wish I could get a version of Roller Controller emulated somehow. That was a totally unique game that I really enjoyed....
