Reproduction Games

Recommended Posts

Hey 2600 Fans, I collect Atari games and over the years I have acquired a few reproduction cartridges for the very rare titles like Air Raid, Magicard, Cubicolor, etc.. I was wondering what serious collectors think about reproduction cartridges and if anyone else has any in there collections. Thanks.

I see nothing wrong with starting out with some reproduction carts. I have a 2600 Ikari Warriors one and just sold a 2600 motorodeo one.

I think it's ok for the really rare games hardly ever seen for sale or prototypes. I have a repro of Pepsi Invaders because I've never had the opportunity to buy the real deal. But, it is an obvious repro cart and would never pass for the real thing.

id love to own some for the harder to find titles myself.

I have one reproduction of Mangia' which is a rarity 10 game. I really liked it when I saw the description and screenshots of it and immediately wanted it. I was just starting out building my collection at the time, and couldn't afford that one right away even if i could find it in NTSC, so I paid $40.00 for that one. Great game in my opinion with large characters on screen.

Mangia, I dont have that one. Do you have any pictures? Does that game even exsist in NTSC?

I know this isn't feasible since they're all different companies with all manner of legalities, but it'd be nice if someone would make a multicart of all the rarity 10's, one of all the 9's, etc.. but I suppose we may as well ride the cuttlefish or krokodile for that one.

Seems rather difficult. All those carbs are deadly.

BTW, it's curious that they apparently use different code to play the power-on music and the start-of-game music, even though they're the same tune. Pushing RESET before the power-on music is complete will trigger the start-of-game music even though the power-on music will continue playing.

You can look up the info. on here in the rarity guide on that one or go to www.atariguide.com for info on it too. Don't have pics of my game, but you can find screenshots of the game at one of these. Awesome must have game.

I'm also looking to trade or sell a reproduction copy of Ikari Warriors and a reproduction Crazy Climber.

I have several repros. I consider them a part of my collection, but I know they aren't rare. Thh ones I have I got because they were games I wanted to be able to play on real hardware, rather than in emulation. Of fthe top of my head, I have several FB2 games on cart, plus repros of Cubicolor and Crazy Climber. Crazy Climber is a game I had repro'd because I love to play it, but it's quite rare, and if I had an original, I would probably have it wrapped up in plastic :)

The other repro-type games I have are all unreleased prototypes (like Loping).

I have a dozen or so reproductions mainly of prototypes but one or two hard to find titles such as Magicard and Hell Driver. There is nothing wrong with repros for it is an easy way to play those hard to find titles but it would be cool to own every prototype going ;)

I own an EPROM programmer, so with a little work, I've actually made a couple of reproductions of my own. I usually make copies of games that I play a lot (like Kaboom) so I don't wear out my originals, but I've also made games that I'll never own the originals for, either because they are extremely rare or because they were never released (these include Video Cube, Meltdown, etc).

To cut down on the number of carts, I sometimes pair up two 2K or 4K games into a single EPROM and use a switch (attached to the top address line) to change from one to the other before I power up the console.

Why would you not have a label on the Cubicolor and Pepsi Invaders unless you were trying to pass them off as originals?

I think Reproductions are fine as long as you dont try to sell them as originals and this could really hurt the future of Atari collecting if people try to pass them off.

All of my repros (games that were acutally released by other companies) have alternate labels. That way, when I eventually have the real deal, I will have an easy way to tell the difference. Passing off repros as the real thing is shitty.

True. I think it's okay for the labels to look exactly as the original, just as long as it has in tiny white letters above the original copyrights that it is a reproduction Cart. That way it can be cool to look like the real deal and see it is a duplicate at the same time. That's how the 2 repro's were that I had that I just sold today on here. I of course let them know in the post that it was repro's also.

I have only one repro and it has no label at all. Well I have two repros, a normal atari 2600 cased Star Wars: Ewok Adventure and a no label Quadrun. The quadrun is a replacement until I get a real copy (will take forever unfortunately) but I have a CC2 now, so I'm all good.

I see what youre saying but I would never try to sell them as originals. Part of collecting games is the appearance of them and all I did was change the case of Cubicolor to an Imagic one to make it look more like an original for my own collection. The last time I saw an actual Cubicolor for sale it was $1100.00 so I know the odds of me ever getting one of the real 60 or so out there is near impossible. As for the Pepsi Invaders I thought the Coke Wins label on it looked a little cheesy so I took it off but once again it was for my own collection to look more authentic and I would never try to sell it.

I totally agree.

Reproductions can (and eventually will) spoil the fun of collecting.

8)

But what about games like Air Raid?, I heard theres only like 7 of these in the world. How is a casual or serious collector ever going to track one of these down?
