How far can you go in 2600 Double Dragon?

Recommended Posts

This is a game with good graphics and sound but is extremely difficult to beat. I have tried on this game many many times, and the furthest i've gotten is right to the end of mission 2. I came so close to making it to the 3rd mission a few times, but didn't quite make it. Anybody on here get any further? Can this game be beaten? If someone has beaten it before, please post. I would like to congradulate you for a job well done. What kinda ending does this game have? Anyone Know?

This game ends when I say "Fuck THIS" and consider acting out in anger but refrain from it because it's hardly a common game.

What's your best technique for fighting? I find the jump kick virtually useless. The only way I can get anything done is to get to the bottom of the screen, wait for the approach, and use well-timed kicks. That uh.. kinda gets boring. I think I have beat the first act once or twice.

You use the same approach as me. Jump kicking is useless too, i agree. I just wish i could make it to the 3rd mission at least once.

I am lucky to get past the first level before wanting to nthrow the game out of the nearest window :D To date I believe that only one person has ever completed the game on one go and I also believed that his name is somewhere on the forums ;)

Double Dragon is a great 2600 game & although baffling at the start is seriously very easy once you get the hang of it. All you have to do to beat every enemy is never stand on exactly the same vertical level as they are. The enemies will only punch/kick you when they are aligned with your sprite. The trick is that you can hit them & inflict damage when they are slightly off level. Thus all you need to do is keep moving from top to bottom of the screen & back again, hitting the enemy only before they completey align with you. Once they have quickly move up or down the screen again & resume punching or kicking. Using this method I can always win it with 2 lives left. I always lose one on the final stage though because the time limit is so short. I honestly think this game is the jewel of the 2600 collection along with KLAX & California Games. The fact that this is even for the 2600 is amazing! They really squeezed every last drop out of the system's capability. It has better sound & moves than the C64 version!

I completed it all the way and got it verified on Twin Galaxies scoreboard (click on my signature to see). I love this game too. I use the same strategy as explained by alex.james and it works well except on the female characters; I do jump kicks or elbows on them.

The time is the thing that becomes a factor with me also. One stage in the game is extremely long. I'd have to look back at me video tape to see which one because I cannot really remember. I'm struggling to remember anything about this game's details right now. You will get all your power renewed when you complete a level, so even when your guy is down to his final damage bar, he can be renewed when you advance to the next scene. This might be wrong, but I seem to remember that I had to lose a man on purpose at one point to get a fresh timer???

Couple of people here have completed the game... there are a number of old topics about it you could probably dig up with a search. I remember one even put up maps of all the stages. Now that's dedication :)

Congradulations on the victory. Job well done. I'll try the tips. Thanks.

I've completed this too, one of my favourite 2600 games which also has the best Tia music on any 2600 game bar none. I also think the backgrounds look better than the NES version!

The end is just like the arcade where you see your girlfriend tied to the wall and a gun totting boss.

The kicking and moving technique easily works the best unless you have a weapon.

I have gotten to the very beginning of the 3rd stage and that was without another person. With somebody else playing with me I can usually get even further than that but I have never seen the end before (does anybody have final boss screenshots?). This is my favourite version of any Double Dragon that I have played and very faithful to the arcade version, It is also the most addicting version. You'll find you and a friend saying "one last game about 20 times before doing something else. Kudos to the Programmer.

Really nice to know that the ending is just like the Arcade. I would have never known unless I beat it, which I am determined to do now. Have you beaten Road Runner for the system?

Also, anothjer impressive title is Rampage for the 2600. I think the graphics are fine for the 2600, but I think it could have been a little better. The sound is okay, but other versions are superior. What mostly impressed me is that everything from the arcade was squeezed into this cart, where some of the 8 bit versions were missing some things that the 2600 included in their tiny cart.

Rampage is impressive as well and shines as another great game for the system in my eyes. I ave beaten Rampage however. There just isn't an ending. The cities start recycling.

I just wish I could beat Road Runner. I got that game when it first come out in 1989, and still haven't been able to beat it. The graphics are top of the line too, and has all the fun and excitement of the arcade with just a couple things left out. As arcade perfect as you can get for the 2600 though in a 16k game. A 32k game like Fatal Run would have suited Road Runner better.

Just recently acquired Fatal Run by the way for the 2600. Another impressive game with lots of features. Very impressive for the 2600, but the cars should have been detailed a little better for a 32k game. Everything else looked great though.

That's how I feel about it too. I'll be playing it for hours on end trying to beat it. I'm usually falling asleep while playing it after playing it for over 3-4 hours late at night.

It's just a fantastic game - Double Dragon for the 2600. Unlike other DD games it takes some effort to figure it out. People who don't like it I feel are that way because it's not like other versions of the game where you can just walk up to an enemy & bash them with no effort. I'm an absolute Double Dragon nut, that's why I put the effort in to figuring out how to beat it in the first place & the satisfaction is well worth it. It has tons more replay value than any other DD game including the Arcade. The guy who programmed this given the 2600's capabilities is a freakin genius. Whenever I show people the Atari I always show them some of the early games & then compare them with how much they milked the system to be able to get a game like Double Dragon out of it.

Rampage on the other hand I'd have to say is a pretty awful conversion & way to easy. They could have done a lot better with that. Road Runner I reckon is the opposite - excellent game but too hard for me.

I thought DD 2600 was undervalued as well. Certainly not a disaster, though I admit it does seem unplayable at first until you work out its own rhythm.

I really liked Rampage, it gets alot of stick (much like Double Dragon) but it is probaly the best conversion possible on the 2600. The sprites are nice as is the presentation its only the building that are a bit lame. The best thing is that its still 2-player!

Agreed. The game is very good and excellent for a 2600 conversion. They included every single thing from the arcade version I can remember into that tiny 16k cart. I would have never thought this game could even be done for the 2600 until I purchased it when it was first released. It's not as pretty as some other versions, but impressive 2600 title indeed. i have always loved this game.

I am so pleased to see Double Dragon getting some deserved appreciation here in this thread. It's about time!

Rampage is pretty good, I agree. My only complaint is its repetitiveness. It does have so much of the arcade version's appeal.

That was me. I just wanted to give proof that I actually finished the game. I should get the game out again and get it on tape for twin galaxies.

Which is why I love threads like these. I've lost count on how many times I have ended up liking a game I didn't give a fair chance because of a thread on AA.

I have to admit that I found this game frustrating, but with some of the advice here, I'll give it a go tonight, along with Rampage and Kung Fu. All three of these are very new additions to my collection, and have kind of gotten lost in the deluge of new carts I picked up at NWCGE.

You certainly will enjoy all three of these. They are great games.
