Sega Genesis and Mega Drive

Recommended Posts

I need some help.

Can you play Sege Genesis carts in a Mega Drive?

Can you play Sega CD games in a Mega CD?

Or, do both these need to be modified?

Any help or opinions would be appreciated

Genesis to Megadrive (and vice versa) will work without a mod since a Mega Drive has a larger cart opening allowing you to use any cart without modification.

The connector parts are identical on the U.S. Genesis and the Mega Drive, its just that the U.S. Genesis has a differently shaped plastic casing which will restrict the type of carts you can use. However, this is easily bypassed. Back in 1989, my friends and I used the so-called "shaving" technique to round out the cart port casing. Or you could just buy a cart port extender thing (they call them a convertor, but they don't actually convert anything) that looks like the Sonic and Knuckles cart.

As for SegaCD to MegaCD, that's a different story. According to import game shop, Playthegames.com, you can use a MegaCD and Genesis HARDWARE interchangably, you can't use SegaCD and MegaCD software interchangably, at least not without a convertor thing called a CD-X (or something like that). From what I understand, these convertors are rather hard to come by. You may want to do some research on the net as there may be some hacks or workarounds, but this does sound right to me as I remember reading into this subject in detail back in the early 90's.

You should also notice that there are 4 jumpers inside the unit, Jumpers 1-2 set the language (jap or english) and Jumpers 3-4 set display typle (NTSC or PAL) I strongly recommend you to read the Sega Genesis FAQ section 1.2 to understand in depth all about the compatibility issue.
