8th lutz #1 Posted April 17, 2006 The date for eb & gamestop is June 1, 2006 for stopping trading ps 1and n64 games. This according to a dp member who works at one of those two chains of stores. It sounds like their planning got a rid of all their stock of ps 1 and n64 games. Getting a rid of ps1 games doesn't make any sense. I thought the ps 3 is supposed to play ps 1. This will hurt getting to n64 or ps 1 games not online. For me it wouldn't be to much of a loss sense they don't carry the ps 1 games I want. I am lucky there are other stores that carry those systems games around me. If your gamestop or eb in you area has a decent selection of ps 1 or n64 games of games you don't have take advantage now. I expect some type of sale or something on those two systems for games after that date.
Chickybaby #2 Posted April 17, 2006 From what we heard the last rumors were that the PS3 won't play PS1 games due to the BluRay but haven't heard official word from Sony yet.
8th lutz #3 Posted April 17, 2006 While that is not official with ps 3 not able to play ps1 games, Sony did announce the end of ps1 production earlier this year.

If it can play PS2 games, it's capable of reading both CD and DVD. Besides, CD is cheap once you have DVD. I believe they're close enough that they can use the same laser diode. I can tell you this general public won't mind. I have more ways to play PS1 stuff than I need. And at some point backwards compatibility needs to go anyway. If the PC industry understood that a bit better we wouldn't have the crap architecture now that we're still stuck with.

And if I recall, ALL the games for the first year or so were CD-ROM.
shadow460 #8 Posted April 17, 2006 Kessen was the first DVD-ROM title for PS2. Anything before that was CD-ROM. I used to own a CD-ROM PS2 game, Arctic Thunder. If PS3 doesn't read CD-ROM games, but does read DVD-ROM games, I think Sony's going to have some angry customers on their hands.

I only have two PS2 CD-ROM games, Timesplitters and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. And this is out of around fifty games between me and my two sons. I bought my slimline PS2 when they came out and I don't really find many of the used CD-ROM games for sale. Most people who will get a PS3 won't even have PS1 or PS2 CD-ROM games. Only hardcore gamefreaks like us will be ticked off.

+kisrael #11 Posted April 17, 2006 Yeah, backwards compatibility is always a mixed bag, how much it matters to buyers and how well it has to be done to count are open debates I think. Certain casual gamers, esp ones who had a lot of gameboy and Sony, are kind of shocked to find out that it isn't the norm...
sega saturn x #12 Posted April 17, 2006 This is not sad news since their prices were generally terrible and the conditions of the games were always awful.
Atariboy #13 Posted April 17, 2006 (edited) PS2 titles on CD-Roms are pretty common. 6 of my 27 PS2 games are on that format even. No way Sony can ignore 20-25% of their PS2 titles when doing backwards compatibility, assuming my collection somewhat reflects the true percentage of cd-rom PS2 titles. And Sky Odyssey was on DVD, I just checked. Was a launch title wasn't it? If the PS3 is to be backwards compatible with the PS2, there is no reason why it wouldn't play cd-rom titles if they're supporting DVD's anyways, and Sony has not even hinted that it wouldn't be compatible with cd-rom titles. Even ICO is on a cd-rom. Don't see how that can be ignored, it's either all or nothing I'd think. Edited April 17, 2006 by Atariboy
sega saturn x #14 Posted April 17, 2006 No sky odyssey wasn't a launch game, but it did come out within the first few months after launch.
JB #15 Posted April 17, 2006 So I was wrong. It just wasn't very common for the first year.
BydoEmpire #16 Posted April 17, 2006 That's too bad. I just picked up Strikers 1945 at Gamestop for $8.
keilbaca #17 Posted April 17, 2006 If they pull that... then there's no way that ps3 can play Gradius V. I'm not worried, I'm not getting a ps3.
Crazy Climber #18 Posted April 18, 2006 Anyone remember stocking up on NES when they pulled those a few years ago, I scored almost a full American Video and Cameica Gold set for about 3 bucks a cart.
ninjarabbit #19 Posted April 18, 2006 The PS3 needs to be able to play 98% or so of PS2 games or the backwards compatabilty is nigh-worthless. Just look at all the grief Microsoft gets for the 360 not being able to play most X Box games. Either do it all the way or don't do it at all, no one wants half-assed backwards compatability. Room 34 #20 Posted April 18, 2006 They still sell NES and SNES games; why would they do away with the PS1 and N64?
MCHufnagel #21 Posted April 18, 2006 They still sell NES and SNES games; why would they do away with the PS1 and N64? I haven't seen NES/SNES games at Gamestop for years now. And the EBGames that I frequent have either stopped selling them or are clearing them out. As a matter of fact the closest EB to my home no longer even carries PSOne or N64 games and hasn't since right after Christmas. So I guessed that this was coming. I thought that it wouldn't happen until after the next-gen systems from Sony and Nintendo came out.
8th lutz #22 Posted April 18, 2006 (edited) They still sell NES and SNES games; why would they do away with the PS1 and N64? The gamestops and ebgames around my area don't carry nes and snes games. It due to room and the amount of ps 1 and n64 games there are in the stores. In my area, the amount ps 1 and n64 games are not that much in those two store chains. The ps 1 games and n64 have going to stores that are multimedia and carry 2600,5200,7800 games in my area. That is without counting fleamarkets. I think the used games for systems that don't have new releases are going to those places along with ebay. I think eb/gamestop is recongizing this along with space on the shelves. Crazy Climber #23 Posted April 18, 2006 They still sell NES and SNES games; why would they do away with the PS1 and N64? They officially quit buying these in Febuary 2004, any games you see there still are just left overs and its usually about 30 copies of Super Mario/Duck Hunt
MetalSlime23 #24 Posted April 18, 2006 People!!!! Let us remember that Gamestop and EB Games are both corporate game stroes, and they don't like to cater to the classic gaming crowd. Hopefully there are smaller, local game shops where you live that sell games from ALL systems, maybe even imports. Then again, there is always EBAY! I persinally have never been able to stand either EB Games or Gamestop, and this is enother reason for me to hate them even more.

I agree, I hate them also, like the last five times I went there they harrased me so bad to reserve games it was just plain annoying. I was trying to be polite but the last time I just said '' Dude, if I want a game I'll let you know so dont ask me again'' I have never reserved anything there anyways so I dont know why they think I'm going to. Anyways why would I reserve a game from them when 9 out of 10 times I can just walk over to Target and get it five bucks cheaper. What is the point! Its also just plain rude to have to wait in line for ever while some employee is bugging the person in front of you to reserve some game he doesnt even want or hasnt even heard of, sorry to rant but I hate them as well.
