Atari cup coaster 10 year anniversary?

Recommended Posts

A customer came in the store today and asked if i wanted to make an offer on a cup coaster from atari and I have never seen one. Anyone know what something like this would be worth. I would get this for anyone that wants it but he only wants to sell if it worth a good amount of money. I dont collect this kind of stuff so is it worth $50?-$100. Thanks

He said his mom or some family member used to have or work at a video game store in the late 70's and they just gave it to her. He also brought in the shirt pin set from all the old arcde games new on the counter display cardboard.

That would make sense, but value??? is probably less then they think. I would say $30 US tops, but they might think it's priceless.

I would also have to say around $20.00 to $30.00, even though it's kind of cool and might be an official Atari employee item, things like that don't go for much money, hell I have stationary and lab paper work from Atari corporation in Sunnyvale CA for just $25.00.

:ponder:  :!:

Compare with the prices on Best's various Atari items: http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/collecta.htm

Like any collectible, it's worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Only a very tiny percentage of the world's population would even care enough to look at this item, and most of us Atari fans wouldn't pay more than ten bucks for this. There's no interesting story. If it was given to game stores then it wasn't a rare item.

I could picture one of these things selling for a hundred bucks on ebay, followed by a few hundred more being pulled out of closets and listed.

yeah, this is a $10 novelty at best. It is far too peripheral to be in much demand or generate much interest outside of the completist collector arena.

Neat, though.

What is it made out of? Metal with some sort of laminated surface? Looks neat. I wonder how many people were still hanging around Atari hq in 1989...

on second thought, is it really a coaster? I have several large medallions that are basically university seals/crests that are given out more for wall or desk decorations than as a cup rest.

I bought mine on Ebay for $5.00 and I was the only bidder. I wouldn't offer him more than $10 for it. It's just a novelty coaster. I remember someone on the RGVG boards a while back (as in a few years ago) offered an unopened roll of 100 of these for $100 and had no takers.

So is it higher in quality or about the same as those old metal ashtrays that used to be on the tables in Burger King and McDonald's? (flashback!)

It's slightly better as it is a little thicker.

Its 3/8 inch thick and heavy maybe right around 1 pound. It might not be a coaster might just be a fancy paperweight. It has some felt on the bottom. I would say it's high quality.

Dang, for a buck a pop I would've bought the roll and then handed them out as party favors and whatnot, included one per eBay auction that I sold, and so on.

That's definitely different from what I have, then. Mine looks exactly like that but doesn't weigh more than a few ounces and is not 3/8s an inch thick. It's maybe 1/8 inch thick.

I still have a stack of those Burger King ashtrays.
