Planet Bob - Simulcra

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

Since the planned series about the SMS titles just desintegrated into a single article, I figured I might as well just continue chronologically with the rest :)

Starting into the 90's, Graftgold finally switched to Amigas, bringing us

Simulcra

Ratings:

Zzap: 88%

LemonAmiga: 7.55

Overview:

This was a first for Graftgold in many ways. It's been their first Amiga title, mainly programmed by Dominic Robinson, exploring the 3D capabilities of the next generation of home computers. It's also been the first bigger team effort, as nearly the whole team contributed bits and pieces to this game.

The gameplay is rather simplistic. You control a mixture between glider and tank across some 3D platform grid, mainly being busy shooting everything that moves.

Larger sections of the grid are blocked by barriers, until you manage to destroy the generators creating them. So you just blast your way from generator to generator, from section to section and from grid to grid.

Fun in 2006:

Well, this game is in the best tradition of other early 3D-efforts on 16-Bit machines. Coming from C64 Elite style wireframed stuff, it's been some spectacular new sight, finally seeing games like Starglider, Virus and others, yet most forgot to back it up with some deep enough gameplay. Same here: Making your way over a grid or two is fun for an hour, then you're already wondering if you wouldn't find better means of spending your time and if there shouldn't be more to life than this... ;)

Simulcra compared to previous Graftgold titles:

Well, if you really want to, you can find some elements of older titles here, but really, within the Graftgold library this is a pretty unique experience. Dominic Robinson was the only Graftgold programmer seriously interested in 3D at the time and he soon left the team to join the 3d specialists "Vektor Grafix"...

Greetings,

Manuel
