I called out IGN re: retro ignorance

Recommended Posts

They've started a new 'Top Ten Tuesday' which sucks, but I was bored at work, so I read it. It makes mention of the famous character 'Error' from Zelda 2 The Adventure of Link and has this as the #2 worst quote ever.

Link here: http://ds.ign.com/articles/702/702269p1.html

Here's what they say

There isn't much we know about the man they call Error. Was that his real name? Was he simply confused? Did the programmers actually include an error signal when a name wasn't included? This guy ranks right up there with Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster. Where did he come from? What is he trying to tell us? We've got a feeling we'll simply never know. No matter; we still raise a glass to our good friend Error. Here's hoping we see you in Twilight Princess…

Problem is if you've ever played Zelda 2, you ought to know exactly who Error is and what his purpose is. I sent this feedback

I am unfortunately dissapointed with your lack of research. One has to wonder who comes up with this stuff and if anyone has ever played the retro games you talk about. "I am Error" in the Adventure of Link is no mystery and anyone who has played Zelda 2 would know this. Once you advance farther into the game and arrive at Mido, there is an NPC there that tells you to back track and speak to Error of Ruto to get info on the Island Palace.

Please remember to do your research going forward or, barring that, how

about actually playing the games you comment on and call out for having 'worst' content? Sure it's good for a laugh, but you look unprofessional to anyone who actually knows what you're talking about. Shoddy work once again. Great job.

Then got this reply

So, since he talks about Error that means it isn't hilarious?

Wow.

Seeing as we were playing games before 99% of our readership was born I think we'll be all right. Thanks for the concern though.

Either get it right, or don't talk about old school games is my point. I guess they don't care about doing the research or spreading factual info about retro titles. Making fun of them is much better, plus who's going to know, right?

Idiots

they would rather make fun than get it right. Error is still plenty comical and interesting, without having him be a "mistake."

Boo to IGN on this one.

99% of their readership?

Isn't the target audience for video games 18 - 35 ?

I would say 50% of that demographic has played with an NES.

And I would say an even higher number has played Zelda.

Also, considering that 'Adventures of Link' has been put out for the GBA fairly recently

that number goes up again.

"Wow" is right.

I dunno man.. I still have kind of a hard time thinking of Zelda 2 as "retro".

Maybe because I was pretty much an adult when I played it new and don't want to think that was all that long time ago since I'm still pretty much the same person :ponder:

I think the thing thats sadder is that people (younger gamers esp) eat their shit up. You would think more people would realize that their site has gone down the tubes. I mean come on, their reviews arent even accurate. I can't tell you how many games I have that I love to death that they have given 6.0's or even below (try 3).

But with money comes cockiness and they have plenty of both...

Tell me about it, I have 3 games in front of me, 2 of which I loved, 1 of which the wife loves, which all earned less than 6.0. Zoo Tycoon DS - 4.0, Battles of Prince of Persia - 5.5, Sprung (wife's game) - 4.0.

They are complete crap. Game Informer has become the only mag/site with reviews that are accurate to my tastes.

I think a town named Rauru is even more funny than a guy named Error. Someone from an old gaming magazine said the name of the town sounds like a dog with a toothache.

Here's another problem I have with the list:

9) "A Winner is You!" - Pro Wrestling

Now who says the NES only offered dated graphics? Pro Wrestling will forever prove to fans that HD wasn't the only thing missing in the old-school age. Things like a 1st grade understanding of the English language was also a bit on the primitive side. Me fine with Hulk Hogan because me cave man and me dumb. Me think Pro Wrestling good, need more man-talk for kick-ass fighting game? As number 9, we here at IGN unanimously agree that when it comes to old-school "engrish," a winner is truly you!

Okay, this is a bit nitpicky, but it is taking a shot at classic gaming. I'll admit that the bad translation is one of my favorite NES moments, but the NES offered dated graphics? Um...at the time, you really couldn't do much better. The Master System is arguable. But other than that, you were heading to the arcade if you wanted better graphics. I guess they don't realize that Halo 2 was not out in 1985? IGN are a bunch of arrogant, self-serving pricks.

Sure, I have a sense of humor. "A Winner is You!" is a hilarious moment in gaming history. But do we really need to take a shot at the NES graphics, saying that they were dated at the time? Assholes.

The whole list was lazy as hell, wow zero wing was number one what a shocker! Come on guys! At least try and find some mistakes that everybody and their grandma hasn't seen. Where were the totally half assed SNK engrish moments? This is why I go to ign for news only, their reviews are worthless and their articles are as fun to read as the mothra movies are to watch.

Wow, taking a shot at Pro Wrestling, quite possibly THE best wrestling game ever made? That's low, man. Starman would kick those guys asses nine ways to Sunday if he got a hold of 'em.

Allright, get a load of this from the article itself.

"The DK Rap takes the cake for the longest pile of literary crap in the industry. Even if it is only number seven in the list, the DK Rap takes the cake as the only song in history that actually sounds like vomit."

Not only is that whole sentence one huge grammar error, have these people ever even HEARD a song by, let's say Britney Spears? Or Raffi? It's certainly NOT the only thing that sounds like vomit.

Ok, they actually used the phrase "Teh Suxorz" in the article. Nothing like a good dose of 133t to turn me off from reading further...

They called Street Fighter Alpha 3 the greatest fighter in history. I'm sure that there's about 9 BILLION gamers out there who'd disagree. Garou-MOW? Street Fighter 3 Third Strike? Soul Calibur 3?

They actually downed on Castlevania Symphony Of The Night's soundtrack. Unbe-freakin-lievable.

"All Your Base" became a household name… at least for sweaty nerds that eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch at 7:00pm." Ummm...is anyone else TOTALLY confused by this line?

And to top it off...a Stephen Hawking joke. Wow, this article had it all. Stupidity, ignorance, arrogance, and sweaty nerds eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch at 7:00pm. Thank you IGN. Truly, thank you. If I had just half the wit that those writers had...well, then I'd be just about a half-wit.

Poor, poor IGN. I remember when they were my favorite gaming site... but then the advertising came. Then the reviews got longer and longer, and had less and less to say. Then Ziff-Davis created 1UP.com, signaling the end of a site that once kicked ass... but now goes a little lower and a lot softer.

Pro Wrestling on the NES was EXACTLY IDENTICAL to the arcade version at the time. IGN can take their dated heads and shove them up their dated asses.

Could the guy who emailed these poor saps send them the link to this thread... i think if they heard some of the arguments they might just (lets not hold our breathe here) wake up. Then again , if you look at the childish reply they gave to his email, you could have a strong argument against that....

Either way its worth a shot.

BTW... I still remember singing along to the DK Rap.... sometimes game corniness can be rather fun and entertaining... everything doesnt need to be frickin GTA and be violent, serious, bloody, and inappropriate. Sometimes hearing Donald Duck get pissed off in Kindom Hearts when he gets hit is just the thing we all need...

I honestly doubt that IGN really cares what the people here have to say. they are going to keep their heads in their self-important asses regardless of what is said here or pretty much anywhere.

They were playing games before 99% of the 18 year old+ demeographic was born and yet think the NES had dated graphics? I guess they were born in some odd dimension that exists outside of time.
