Why is Midnight Magic Different than the Computer Version?

Recommended Posts

One of my favorite games for the 2600 is Midnight Magic. However, I've always wondered why the game was different than the computer versions? Was it a limitation of the 2600?

Probably. Midnight Magic (properly called David's Midnight Magic on computer) was probably too busy for the 2600 to handle, so it got stepped down to fit in the narrow parameters of the hardware. They might have been able to ramp up the graphics if they made a larger ROM.

I kind of figured it was somethign like that. Honestly, I never really played David's Midnight Magic very often. I think I had it on the Apple IIe, but for some reason, it never really grabbed my interest.

I also wondered if Atari had designed Midnight Magic with another name in mind, but decided to license and use the Midnight Magic title to help it sell. Who knows... It will be one of those Atari mysteries...

Video Pinball Arcade definitely comes to mind (mine at least), since it looks pretty much close to it than the actual 2600 game that got the Video Pinball name.
