shadow460 #4 Posted April 28, 2006 Snipe always. I actually won a semi rare game today without sniping, and without the price going through the roof. Won Shining Force: Sword of Hajya for a total of $22 shipped. My final bid was about eight hours to auction close, but I didn't think I'd be home when the auction ended. Lucky Man #5 Posted April 28, 2006 My sniping ways may be over. I've lost a few items lately because my bid didn't go through in time. Don't know what the holdup was.
shirleysswapshop #6 Posted April 28, 2006 Sniping is the only way to go to get the good deals. You know.. I actually don't really understand sniping. I bid at the end of the auction hoping to get my bid in during the last few seconds hoping someone else doesn't go any higher.. or can't rebid. But, if the high bidder ..bid what he/she is willing to pay..and I bid more..I don't consider that sniping..just being the high bidder. However if it is something I want.. I'll just put in a bid in which I am willing to pay.. and maybe a few bucks more..just in case.. However if it is something I really want and I am afraid of snipers.. I'll put in a bid of $10,000 on a $300.00 item..so if a sniper does wait.. I will still win the bid.. However I know that is risky..just incase some one else bids a crazy amount, I might get burned..but it hasn't happened yet. Who knows..I might be doing this wrong.. but it has worked for me so far.. shadow460 #9 Posted April 29, 2006 When you snipe, you place your bid so late that fewer people can react. If you're willing to pay $100 for an item, you'd normally just bid $100 and then have a nice day. However, while you're having a nice day, someone else is desperately trying to win the item, but they aren't willing to pay more than $90. Now let's assume saiditem is priced at $50 when you first click on it, then you place the $100 bid. The other bidder has hours, even days, to gradually increase his proxy in the attempt to outbid you. He's got hours to think about what sacrifices he can make to pay a little more for the item. If, however, you place the $100 bid at three seconds to the buzzer, you certainly don't give that other bidder a chance to think about how high he can go, let alone place that $80 bid. It gives him about enough time to think "Oh, my, I'm losing", then maybe very hastily type a lower than $90 bid in (only to find out you've bid way higher than any sane person), and then the auction closes. You've saved yourself at least $10 right there--possibly you've saved $25 or more. You are almost certain you're going to win the item with your $100 bid, but if no other bidders know you're going to out in a $100 proxy, they can't re bid over and over, trying to win and running up your cost in the process. Of course, all it takes is a couple of desperate people (or a single moron) to run the price way over your $100 proxy. In that case, you can either find a similar item and bid on that or just keep having a nice day. You get to keep your $100.
telengard #11 Posted April 29, 2006 Sniping is the only way to go to get the good deals. Hate to say it, but it's true. Although lately knowing I won't be able to snipe certain auctions I've been bidding way in advance on stuff and actually winning them. Sorta weird. To the guy bidding 10k to ensure an auction win, better hope no one else gets that same idea. ~telengard

To the guy bidding 10k to ensure an auction win, better hope no one else gets that same idea. ~telengard That's the danger of the "win at any price" mentality. Don't ever bid more then you are willing to pay. Sometimes I react quickly to a BIN and curse myself later, but I have never gone so overboard that I had to take a second mortgage out. I bid and get out bid. I snipe and get sniped. If I really want something I'll probably do both. Just depends on the situation. I think you can apply all of the analyst you want to eBay, but in the end it's all a matter of luck. You might be bidding one week on a particularly valuable item that all the hardcore collectors already own and get it cheap. Perhaps the two other guys that need it also forgot the auction as they were watching football or were at a high school reunion. You just never know when you'll score something cheap. Almost Rice #15 Posted May 1, 2006 sniping is the best way to bid on stuff you want. You just have to remember to bid. I have lost many poorly advertised items because I forgot to bid or was too busy at the end time. I sniped a 1200xl last week 5 minutes before the end. That is the earliest sniped I have ever won. My GF will kill me if she finds out I won.
ismokeblunts #16 Posted May 2, 2006 my user id on ebay is 'iwantthatemerson' and the auction i sniped, was indeed, an emerson. har har. i misseed out on the first emerson i bid on, but i got this one, minus a couple of cables. i'm not all that sure it was the greatest deal, but i'm happy with what i paid. providing that is that everything runs once i hook it up. but i can get her fixed for a reasonable enough price that it'll still be cheaper in the end than the last auction i bid on. link... http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...AMEWN%3AIT&rd=

Dino #25 Posted May 8, 2006 Sniping does not work on the higher priced collectors items. Trying to snipe more than you are willing to pay on very rare items will only get you in trouble. It only works on less experienced ebay users.
