ComputerCollector #1 Posted May 3, 2006 (edited) I went to a friends house yesterday and played with a tv RCA hookup doohicky he got from walmart for a few bucks. I never played with one before. I must admit, when I first saw it I thought it would probably be cheesy. but I was proven wrong! Ms Pacman was just like in the arcade & it had great sound and picture quality. I also played 3 awesome games that I never played before. I was surprised that I never heard of these before. I was very surprised that their not in my huge collection, for that matter! Rally x was real neat. I drove around and got flags and stuff. Bosconian another cool game Mappy. I didnt know what the heck I was doing here, but it looked pretty neat. Although the games were cool, I didnt like the joystick at all. So question is, are any of these games available in disk or cartridge format and if so, for what systems? They are also all old arcade games believe it or not. I think it's safe to say this is what his friend has: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1099394930145
Vic George 2K3 #5 Posted May 3, 2006 I never played Rally X, Bosconian, or Mappy until M.A.M.E. came along. I have seen Rally X and Bosconian in action in the arcades, but I don't think I remember seeing Mappy anywhere in my coin-op journeys. Of the three games listed, I'd prefer Rally X as a must-play, with Bosconian ranking second in that category.
Flojomojo #6 Posted May 3, 2006 Wow, how young are you people not to have played Mappy or Bosconian in the arcades the first time around?
BrianC #7 Posted May 4, 2006 (edited) Wow, how young are you people not to have played Mappy or Bosconian in the arcades the first time around? I'm 26. I have played Mappy in arcades, but I have never seen a Bosconian or Rally-X machine (with the exception of that Namco Classics machine with Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and Rally-X and enhanced modes for all three). Heck, I have only seen a couple Pac-Man machines back when I was young and all of them were hacks. Edited May 4, 2006 by BrianC

Vic George 2K3 #9 Posted May 4, 2006 I'm 37, and I never played either in the arcades.
ZylonBane #10 Posted May 4, 2006 Rally X is an A8 game ... Bosconian is on the A8 & there might be a priate 2600 version If by "A8" you mean "8-bit Atari home computers", then... no. Also, the Bosconian-esque 2600 game is Mission 3000 AD.
NovaXpress #11 Posted May 5, 2006 Has there ever been a licensed home version of Rally X or Bosconian for any system?
Lord Helmet #12 Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Other than on the Namco compilation disks, I don't think so. Shame, because both are alot of fun. The closest thing to Rally X would be Radar Rat Race on teh c64 (and the Vic 20 IIRC). Edited May 5, 2006 by Lord Helmet
BrianC #13 Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Rally X and Bosconian had official ports on the Japan/Europe only MSX computer. Many other official Namco ports like Mappy, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaga, Tank Battalion/Battle City, Dragon Buster, and Xevious (official, but ported/remade by Compile) were on it too. Godzilla #14 Posted May 5, 2006 The best home version of Bosconian (even better than the arcade,) is the x68000 version. I'm a HUGE Bosconian fan and love the game so much I imported an x68000 just for this version :-) http://www.emulatronia.com/reportajes/x680...8-bosconian.htm rally-x is another great early arcade game, the vic-20 version of radar rat race is the best vintage rally-x I've played. Here's some history http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...3D%26safe%3Doff Mappy is also another hugely awesome game. My favorite version of mappy is actually a pirate clone for the amiga called 'larry and the robbery of the ardies' http://www.thelegacy.de/Museum/1406/ there is also a really good game gear licensed version of the arcade game but I believe it was japanese only. Lord Thag #15 Posted May 6, 2006 Bosconian is one of my favorite underdog games. Not much of a Rally X fan. Mappy is great fun, I play that on my PSP occasionally, having never seen the coin-op. Someone should do a homebrew of Bosconian.
spongebue #16 Posted May 8, 2006 Rally X is an awesome game, but I always feel as though any crashes I make are very avoidable, so I feel silly when it happens
Student Driver #17 Posted May 8, 2006 Has there ever been a licensed home version of Rally X or Bosconian for any system? An official Bosconian made it onto Spectrum, CPC, and C64 in the UK as "Bosconian 87" by Mastertronic. (Image from lemon64.com.) Namco also published a cart of it for the Sord M5-- apparently similar to MSX, though not completely compatible. (Image from old-computers.com.) Godzilla #18 Posted May 9, 2006 that c64 game is no bosconian. or a bosconian in name only. It's quite the travesty and quite a lot of suck. I was -so- stoked at the time when I heard the c64 had bosconian and I did everything I could to get it... and then... UNGH... like sand in the vaseline. moycon #19 Posted May 9, 2006 Mastertronic? I have some sort of RPG from those people, Black Crystals maybe? I think that was a budget software company. From what I remember...Suck doesn't begin to descibe that RPG.
Student Driver #20 Posted May 9, 2006 Mastertronic eventually evolved (through buyouts and such) into Virgin Software, and was mostly a budget a label here in the US. Few of their releases here were good (can't think of any US budget label that was reliably decent, really), but I enjoyed their release of the Games Creator. Maybe some UK members could relay their impressions of the company. Bosconian 87 has some of the original game play elements (including the fortress-like things), and obviously tries to play similarly, so I'd say it's more than just Bosconian-in-name-only... Godzilla #21 Posted May 9, 2006 Yea, tries, and fails, like a hurdle jumper with no legs. If I gave games points for just trying... :-) I remember reading an interview with the programmer of the game, and he was apologizing to bosconian fans and embarrased that the unfinished piece o shite got released and sold to unsuspecting peeps. Hah! Sounds like the typical Mastertronic procedure... sometimes I think it's an accident that any of their games were playable.
ComputerCollector #23 Posted May 12, 2006 Yes, Moycon, thats the one. I might get if if I see it cheap in walmart. But Im going to look for this Radar rat race game first
