Best Super Mario Game?

Recommended Posts

Sure, this has probably been discussed before, but what the heck, let's try it again. So, what's everyone's favorite Super Mario game? It doesn't actually have to be "Super", just Mario. Mine? Nothing beats the orignal Super Mario Bros.! That one is certainly my fav. SMB 3 comes up second.

Super Mario 1 on the NES was OK, purely for helping push the so-called "next gen" of gaming in the mid 80's.

The best Mario game was easily Super Mario 4 on the SNES. It all pretty much went downhill for Nintendo after those early SNES glory years.

I like all of the Mario games on NES for different reasons.

I like the first one because it is a classic side scroller adventure type game (and it keeps score!)

I like Mario2 because it is totally different from any other Mario type game (you pull up root crops for the love of pete!)

I like Mario3 cause it took the cool stuff from Mario1 and totally juiced it.

Sorry I can't pick a fav.

My vote is for Super Mario 2. It was the most original and had the best replay value to me.

I love SMB3--it has everything I like about SMB, and makes it bigger and better. Mario World is a lot of fun, too--but I'll always have loyalty to the third installment.

I have to say I like 1 & 2, also.

I actually liked the old Super mario land on the chunky old gameboy. There's some great level design in there.

I really did like SMB3, but the lack of a save function really took away a few points since it was such a massive game to play through completely in one sitting. And no, I do not use WARP ZONES.

On the SNES, SMB3 was enhanced with a save function, but the game felt a little different on the SNES. Even then, the save function wasn't as it should have been...I believe it only let you save the last world you completed, so there was a good deal of repetition involved.

I think the best feature of SMB3 that was so under utilized was that Karuba's Bouncine Boot thing that you could slip into and stomp enemies with. Sadly, it appeared in only one level(!!!) and was such a cool enhancement they should have utilized it more in that and future games. Guess Yoshi kinda took it's place in SMB4 as he functionally did the same thing minus the tongue attack.

If I remember correctly, the SNES SMB 3 wasn't altered too much. Sure, there was the backgrounds and music, but the graphics were for the most part quite similar to the NES version, unlike SNES SMB 1. Personally, I prefer the NES release, simply because it's original.

While I don't usually claim to be very good at many video games, I can sit down with Super Mario 3 and go through the whole game level by level in a few hours. I did it once and timed myself to see how long I could do it in, and it was under five hours

While I have Super Mario All*Stars and I love it, I agree that the feel just wasn't there. If we are going by the best Mario game though, Super Mario All*Stars would be it for me, as the "real" Super Mario Brothers 2 is incredibly fun! Am I the only one who has been crazy to beat it level by level the whole way through yet?

Yes! And I personally did not like Yoshi at all. In fact, I was horribly disappointed with Mario World after having played Mario 3 for hours and hours. I wish that Nintendo would release a game for the computer that would be just like Mario 3, except that it would also include a level builder. Think about the fun that a person could have with that!

It's not quite fair, but SM64 is my favorite.

But of the 2D ones I'd say Super Mario World on SNES with Super Mario 3 next.

While the All Stars edition looks good, I like my games authentic as possible (another reason Genesis Double Dragon is my favorite home port), so the SMB Deluxe version is my favorite version of SMB LL (II).

Yes you are a nut. During the initial NES heyday I read in Electronic Game Player (The old version of EGM) that there was a "REAL" Super Mario Bros. 2 that was only released in Japan. Well I went nuts until I finally was able to score on for myself (luckily I lived in a good place for Famicom bootlegs) and let me tell you, I was totally floored... not at how good it was, but how hard! I tried my best at it but the worst was playing and struggling for hours to clear some stages, then stumbling into some warp pipe and it TAKES YOU BACK A COUPLE OF STAGES. ARRRGGHHH. Needless to say I eventually gave up

p.s. Now with Mario All Stars and the abundance of 'walk-throughs' for the game (which I didn't have then) maybe I'll give it a shot again someday... then again maybe not.

oh and my vote for best Mario game.. I like Mario 64 myself

Are you talking Paper Mario on N64? I've beat that, its pretty good. Kinda like a "My First RPG" but not so dumbed down experienced players would shun it.

A level editor for any of the Mario side scrollers would be incredible!!!!

yeah, beating Mario2 straight through is the only way I do it. I do not use WARPS either.

I'd have to say my favorite is actually SMB 2. I think it's awesome. Sometimes it's hard to decide if my fave ain't SMB 3 or 1 though. On average though, Id say it goes 2, 1, 3. World wasn't bad as well. There all good. What does everyone think of Wario Land on the Virtual Boy? I think it was pretty good myself.

Wario Land on VB was sweet!

Technically, Paper Mario is Mario RPG 2. The first one is a sweet SNES game, that you must check out, or die. Geno Beam 4 life

Are we all forgetting the original Mario Bros.? How about the line of Game & Watches? And who could ignore the unforgettable Mario is Missing? Or Hotel Mario?

No fave, just all good for their own reasons like children,

SMB1, the classic the original, the first video game I ever played.

SMB2, the one SMB i could NEVER get. (i own 2 copies now though)

SMB3, the very first video game I bought new. and just at the time what I thought had the best graphics ever.

SMB for game boy, what a fun game! a portable mario was always cool

but, whats cooler?

THE portable super mario!

the game and watch!!!

my first portable video game and the best

built LCD shaped one ive bought, I broke mine

whilst mad at something else and haven't lived it down since, what I would do for another one... *sniff*

SM World, the first SNES game the first console I remember that was "coming out!"

so I had to play that new mario game!

*sigh* such great memories...

oh and mario RPG is a SNES game Stan.

its a 3dish perpsective game with a story

line and its just an RPG using good grahpics

used one of the SNES's super chips.

Bummer. I think the Game & Watch SMB was awesome, I found the mini-classics release last weekend at the store (I had no idea they still sold these!). Sure, it's not as big as the original, but VERY portable, and I know I'm the first one to own it new. And I didn't have to spend $40.00 for one on ebay !

If it's anything like Donkey Kong Jr., there are some minute gameplay differences between the rereleased mini Game & Watches and the originals. For example in the keychain DKJR if you sidestep there is a slight millisecond delay before you'd be able to jump. In the original you could sidestep and instaneously jump at will. Also the keychain version didn't double the point value if you reached 300 points without losing a life. And if you did lose a life I don't think it cleared your misses either.

But then again I don't know anything about the G&W Super Mario Bros. as I never owned one. I would like to try it out
