What is atari thinking with Earthworm Jim?

Atari anounced they have online and handheld rights to Earth Worm Jim.

 

What gets me is atari is saying that Shiny is working on a 3D side-scrolling platformer "for next-generation handheld system."

 

Don't they realize what killed the EarthWorm Jim Franchise a first place was when the EarthWorm Jim franchise went from 2d to 3d.

 

EarthWorm Jim was a hot franchise when it was in 2d near the end of the 16 bit era but the ball was dropped when it made for the n64 and it was called Earthworm Jim 3d?

I wonder when they say "3D side-scrolling" if that doesn't mean a 2.5D game. I really hope so - that style really works well on handhelds IMHO. If that's the case, a return to EWJ could be really good. If it's freeroaming 3d, well, let's just say they've tried it before...

I don't know what else "3D sidescrolling" could mean besides 2.5D... unless they just mean an actual 2D sidescroller with polygon graphics (like New Super Mario Bros. for the DS).
