Calling all nethack fans!

 

A few questions

 

1. Do you play nethack as ascii; or use a frontend? I am acustomed to using Falcon's Eye.

 

2. What class are you usually? I am usually a Rogue or a Samuri. Tourists are funny.. wearing hawian shirs and carrying a credit card lol.

I've played Nethack quite a bit, as well as plenty of Rogue-likes. Nethack (and Rogue) has that cool randomness to it that gets you coming back playing quite often. On the other hand, the randomness can often as not have you dead rather quickly for lack of food, medical attention, or due to an inordinate amount of beasties that swarm you as you're unable to break free to seek healing.

 

On the other hand I like the questy, adventurey aspects of Rogue-likes such as Moria, Omega, etc. There's an Ultima-like feel to those, with plenty of plot, but also with its share of randomly-generated dungeons scattered about during side quests. Although the main plots don't change, accomplishing them is never twice quite the same because of that randomness.

 

They both have their merits. I've tried Falcon's Eye (still have it installed, in fact), and it's quite nice as a graphical rendition of Nethack, but there's something to be said for the simplicity and fast pace of the ASCII verison, too. I almost always play a Rogue. They're good all-round characters without the inherent weaknesses of wizardly-types or the magical inabilities of fighter-types. Although they excel at nothing specifically, they're acceptable at just about everything.
