scogey #1 Posted May 22, 2006 This just cme to mind cuz we are playing Donkey Kong on HSC this week and the fireballs on that game dont look ANYTHING like fire... While we love the 2600 for it's simplicity, the challange for gamemakers was to create as realistic looking a product as possible. Sometimes, unsuccessfully.....In a funny way. what are some of your all time favorite poorly rendered objects in 2600 history? here are a few of mine 1. fireballs from Donkey Kong.....or ducklings? 2. the torpedoes in AirLock....which look somewhat like half of the man from.....AirLock 3. the "car" in Night Driver...some slack given to the fact that this is an early game, dont get me started about everything in Adventure 4. the "pickle" that chases you if you take too long in a room in Venture. Feralstorm #2 Posted May 22, 2006 Gotta be the Airlock "Torpedoes". Every other choice at least sorta kinda looks like what it's supposed to be if you've got an imagination.
Rom Hunter #3 Posted May 22, 2006 (edited) The shape of these fireballs has always puzzled me, even back in the eighties. I think the programmers really tried to give shape to a moving fireball with a pair of eyes in it, instead of creating a duck: Too bad they didn't succeed... JagFan422 #8 Posted May 22, 2006 how about anything supposed to be circular. My sister used to make fun of Pinball because the ball was a square.
Vic George 2K3 #9 Posted May 22, 2006 I thought they did a good, if not excellent, job with 2600 Smurf Rescue in depicting Smurf and Smurfette close to how they actually appear in comicbooks and cartoons. But yeah, the graphical limitations of the 2600, and how little programmers knew about how to accurately depict everything in the early years of programming games (and even in the later years) made for some real humorous confusion over what certain objects are supposed to be, like the fireballs-or-ducks situation on the second screen of 2600 Donkey Kong. Unfortunately, the 2600 doesn't seem to have a signature digital avatar like Mattel Intellivision's "running man" or the Magnavox Odyssey 2's "man" that appears in various games. 128bytes #10 Posted May 22, 2006 I always thought the fireballs in the second screen of 2600 Donkey Kong looked like Aladdin's lamp...

godzillajoe #12 Posted May 22, 2006 Donkey Kong himself looks pretty bad. Donkey Kong Jr. looks worse.
keilbaca #13 Posted May 22, 2006 now don't forget, donkey kong was a coleco game... they intentionally butchered it so they can sell their own ColecoVision because it looks better.
Tempest #14 Posted May 22, 2006 The shape of these fireballs has always puzzled me, even back in the eighties. I think the programmers really tried to give shape to a moving fireball with a pair of eyes in it, instead of creating a duck: Too bad they didn't succeed... I always thought they were called Fire Foxes (this was long before the browser of course). To the best of my knowledge they were never actual fireballs, they were creatures of some sort. That's why the chase you up and down ladders and such. Tempest
