super_dos_man #1 Posted May 25, 2006 I know nothing about it. I look at the controllers and I loved em. so, what is a decent price? what are some good games? is it worth the money?
Pixelboy #2 Posted May 26, 2006 Well, there are two things you need to be careful about: 1) The hardware is somewhat unreliable to begin with, because Coleco always went for the cheapest off-the-shelf electronic components, which means that 20 years later you'll be hard-pressed to find a CV console that works perfectly. There are places (such as doubledown's vikingvideogames.com), where you can get your CV console refurbished and also modified to work on newer TV sets. 2) ColecoVision game cartridges are pretty easy to find, especially on eBay, and you can get them cheaply if you can live without boxes or instructions. But if I were you, I would be careful to avoid the "edutainment" crap. Go for the classics (DK, Burgertime, Bump'n Jump, the list goes on) and you'll be a happy camper. You can also purchase a USB cart from atarimax.com in which you can download up to 127 CV ROMs. No need to store 100 cartridges! How nice is that?! Overall, the ColecoVision is definately worth your time and money. It's got some great games, and new homebrew carts pop up every year.
warmachine #3 Posted May 26, 2006 (edited) Of coures you should get one. it's the perfect example of early 80's excess. If you do happen to get one, the atarimax cart is definately the way to go. it can store almost every game created for the system and you can buy the games that it can't hold rather cheaply. it's a great system that died out way too soon. Atari-Jess #5 Posted May 26, 2006 Atari turned into a computer company after selling itself to the founder of Commodore (They kicked him out) they didn't return to video games until the NES came out.
Schmead55 #6 Posted May 27, 2006 Of course you should. I bought mine about two months ago, and the 2600 has taken a back seat to it for not, not to blaspheme or anything. I'd recommend it, some REALLY great games are out on it. And there's a pretty big fan-base for games, advice, etc etc. TTFN Mateo
warmachine #7 Posted May 27, 2006 and you can still play 2600 games on it.
Brad2600 #8 Posted May 28, 2006 I know nothing about it. I look at the controllers and I loved em. so, what is a decent price? what are some good games? is it worth the money? I don't know. Should you? Do some research before you buy ANY system. Don't just go by the opinions of folks on here. Make sure of the following: -The system works -The games you are looking into buying are actual CV carts (People confuse these for 2600 carts on Ebay often) -Don't pay $50 for a CV and a game. Make sure you get a CV that has several games and comes from a reputable seller Also, research the types of games that the CV has. If you're planning to collect, it can be a good system to do so for. SteveW #9 Posted May 28, 2006 If it's possible, try to test the system out first. Like it's been said, reliability for them isn't anywhere near the Atari 2600's level. The 2600 could be buried in molten magma, pass through an elephant's digestive tract, or sit on the bottom of the ocean for a year, and there's a pretty good chance that it'll still work. A Colecovision will act up if you sneeze within a mile of it. I picked up three over the last year and a half, and until recently (when I got a decent power supply) I didn't have one that worked. But there's a really good selection of interesting games for it, so I say you should (cautiously) go for it.
