Trying to remember the name of a game?

Firstly I am only 20 years old, so I don't really use the Atari's anymore (I am a x-box/PC-CDROM user)

 

But many, many years ago my brother had the Atari 2600 (I think... huh it might not of even been an atari) and there was a game on it which I use to play CONSTANTLY!

 

Now like I say I think it was on the 2600, it could have been a later model, or even a different system all together.

 

Anyway I wll try to describe the game and if you know what the game is called please tell me!

 

The game started off with what seemed like a chess board. On the bottom of the "chess board" you had a selection of characters (dragons, Barbarians etc etc) and on the top of the "chess board" you had the same collection of characters but in a different colour (these where your opponents).

 

Firstly you would select the character (from the bottom of te screen) that you would like to be. Then (i think) you selected the enemy of which you would like to fight.

 

You both then got put in an arena and fought! The arena was simply the whole screen with a few blobs here and there (I guess these where trees, rocks etc). Each character had their own style of attack and you would roam this arean trying to kill you opponant.

 

Once you have won, or lost that character is taken from the board and you repeat the selection process again, until all your opponent (or you) are dead. Then you win!

 

They released a sequal to this game too, but it wasn't as good as the first!

 

Can anyone remember what game this was! If so where can I get the rom of it? And what is the best emulator for the system it ran on?

The game is Archon.

 

I know it from the Commodore 64. The IMO best emulator is ccs64.

I believe the game you are talking about is Archon which was a chess like game where you had to fight for the square you wanted to occupy. And there was a sequal which I like also called Archon 2. That game you had a certain amount of power which you would use to summon creatures to fight for you. It was never release for the Atari 2600. But it was released on a lot of home computers, Comadore 64, Apple etc. I don't know if its possible, but I wouldn't mind seeing it ported on to the Atari.

I certainly never played it on the C64, that was my first ever computer... many years ago.

 

I played this game before I bought the C64 and I am saw it was a atari system!

 

I can still remember what the computer looked like. It had a keyboard and the disk drive was seperate from the computer. It took the larger black disks (5"??)

 

If any of you can tell me a place where I can see some pics of a machine that fits this description then Ill let you know what machine it was.

 

But I am sure it was on a atari!?!?

Archon for the ATARI 800 rules... I still play it constantly..(didn't like Archon II as much though)
