Womble76 #1 Posted May 30, 2006 Has it died? DNS servers no longer seem to have heard of it, have done a dig at Aussie, NZ, UK and US servers and they all know nothing - wonder if they forgot to re-register their domain. Anyone know anything?
Rianata #2 Posted May 30, 2006 (edited) I've visited the site last week... mm, hope it will be back online soon... Google doesn't have any history in it's cache!? Maybe they switched url's, cause there's a http://www.atariforum.com/ now as well... which isn't active as of yet, but you can signup for a opening notification. Apparantly, the servers powersupply went up in smoke and took the mobo along with it to electronic heaven. Should be up in a day or two, atleast that is what they say at the backup forum. (I'm sorry, but I do not have that URL handy, however, you can find it at atarilegend. )
Dan Iacovelli #4 Posted May 30, 2006 I.m kind of confused now becaue I know atari-users.net has http://www.atariforums.com/ and thast been up for along time. I have no idea about the others
Greenious #5 Posted May 30, 2006 I.m kind of confused now becaue I know atari-users.net has http://www.atariforums.com/and thast been up for along time. I have no idea about the others It's not that confusing. It is 2 different places. http://www.atari-forum.com is probably the most active ST forum around. It is run in close relationship with http://www.atarilegend.com. And the backup forum, for those that get depressed when atari-forum is down, and those who just want info as to what happened, when it returns etc..is http://atarilegend.com/pbpBB/

Womble76 #9 Posted February 6, 2007 Seeing as the server itself is still up I imagine some form of hard drive failure, or perhaps even a total server fail with the server being replaced by the drives not yet hosting the forum recovered from backups. belboz #10 Posted February 6, 2007 Seeing as the server itself is still up I imagine some form of hard drive failure, or perhaps even a total server fail with the server being replaced by the drives not yet hosting the forum recovered from backups. Nothing like that. Here is a quote from one of the main guys who runs it. This post from him was back on January 24th. When AF is down people go here for info. http://atarilegend.com/pbpBB/ Hi, The forum will down until next week-end. I closed it because of the last messages... well, you all know which one. The forum needs a big clean up. Also it needs some rules for the childish: considering the last messages, it looks like there are more & more children which play with atari computers. It's great, but they have to grow a bit. I will post a thread as soon as it is back. If I have time, I'll update the board to the last version of phpBB. Cu soon, Brume. Paolo #12 Posted February 10, 2007 (edited) I am pretty regular at AtariForum, but I don't know what is this "message you know". Anybody can share the knowledge? Edited February 10, 2007 by Paolo
Christos #13 Posted February 10, 2007 (edited) It is explained in this thread... http://atarilegend.com/pbpBB/viewtopic.php?t=47 It should have been online by now but I guess something went wrong with the update... OK I understand what you ask now: About the messages, I might have missed the last message that was the last drop but there was a quarrel between a few members that went personal though it started as technical. techie_alison #14 Posted February 11, 2007 (edited) To be wholly honest, Brume (site owner) is fully entitled to do what he wants. He does not get paid for hosting the forum, and in the final months there were quite a few silly little arguments going on amongst members. Brume is not punishing anyone, but quite simply doing what he wants. There are various Atari sites going down as all they end up as is a hassle for the owner with little or no thanks. FTP sites for example; newcomers aren't just downloading what they need, they've been TOTALLY hammering the servers and downloading everything. The old saying stands; You abuse it, you lose it. We seem to have had a significant number of enthusiasts entering the Atari scene who are just after what they can take, without giving anything back. And then they start complaining about what is free. A growing number of the hardened techies are just putting their hands up in the air and saying 'Sod it.' I was developing WeST which is a CF card ACSI hard disk interface, just that the newcomers expect to pay like a tenner for it and then start complaining about how much it costs. Fine. Solution is simple. I'll (we'll) do something else. I was getting transfer rates well up to the DMA maximum of 1MB/second. As purely I was proud of what I was doing so put the time into the it's development. It's took months of 8-hour days to develop something that not only worked but had full CRC capability too. Microcontrollers with lots of I/O and which run at 40MIPS ain't cheap!! About £15-20 a go if you're splitting hairs. Now if I was buying them by the thousand then maybe lets say £8-9. The reason why your USB card reader for your PC only cost a tenner is that they made 5-million of the things in China!!!!!!! Atari-Forum hasn't been taken down out of spite. It's been taken down as it became nothing but a hassle for the owner, much attributed to the points mentioned above. tjlazer #15 Posted February 15, 2007 Well any forum will have issues like that, but just because a few wankers had to show their areses should not mean take the whole site down. I know a lot of us enjoyed that forum, I know I did. I gave my contribution every time I could--as others did too. Well that is a shame, but as you say the owner can do what he wants. I do hope he reconsiders and just bans any wanker that causes problems! No need to get upset or worry about people like that. Just ban their arses!! +remowilliams #17 Posted February 15, 2007 Oh good lord, don't tell me that the ST community has now caught the 'Jaguar drama' disease.
Christos #18 Posted February 15, 2007 (edited) I am not going to comment on the "jaguar drama" as you say, it wouldn't be appropriate since I don't own one. However I will say that there was a climate of hostility between a few members that resulted into an exchange of personal attacks maybe a bit unjustified. But a simple moderation could have solved this and I don't think closing the forum down was necessary. However as has already been said, the administrator does what he wants. I am pretty sure that it is not something permanent though I hope that the forum will be back online soon. Even if it's not open the knowledge residing in it, cannot be found easily anywhere else. Edited to clarify my position a bit.... Edited February 15, 2007 by Christos
Christos #19 Posted February 20, 2007 And since I really love being the bearer of good news, the forum is back online.
