The 10 year rule?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about the way in which the abundance of videogames in the wild relates to their time of most popularity.

It seems to me that there is a lot of Gensis (Mega Drive) and Master System stuff about at the moment (circa 1992ish?), and from what I can gather, Atari 2600 stuff was about during the mid 90's, almost exactly 10 years after the 2600 reign was its height.

Does anyone else find this? and does it mean that in 2011 I will be finding a lot of Dreamcast stuff?

About the "10 year rule" well in my opinion it's not like you can predict for "X" system that in 10 years you will be able to grab loads of it just because of destiny.

In my experience I've noticed that Videogame Systems make a curve, take the SNES for example, most of the games were released in the early 90s, it wasn't until 1996 trough 1999 that you could find almost any SNES game for under $10, but nowadays it's getting harder to find SNES stuff to the point where some aftersought games like Yoshi's Island can easily be sold for $20-$30. Now let's consider the N64, it was released in 1996 and since 2001 you can find tons of N64 games for dirtcheap prices.

So I guess that every system has a different lifespan and that you have to calculate it for each individual system.

Hell, Dreamcast games are already pretty damn cheap and easy to find... I don't think it'll take 10 years there...

Things might also change once we start considering CD's classic... they aren't quite as sturdy as the 2600 carts we're used to.

Maybe in second hand games stores etc, but how much are you actually seeing in the wild? Same for N64 (which they are still producing games for I believe)...

In the wild I have only seen a handful of games for DC so far.

What I was aiming at was in the wild i.e. thrifts / flea markets in great quantities for less than $5, and being approximately 10 years after the period of its most popularity.

It seems a pretty accurate model to me.

Well, I consider second-hand video game stores to be in the wild as well... especially since I know lots of them that still sell Nintendo games and all. I don't see a lot of Dreamcast games at thrift stores, but they're easily common in pawn shops.

I'm pretty sure they stopped making N64 games a long time ago...
