Super Metroid: Redesign

Recommended Posts

Anyone play this yet? I just tried it yesterday for the first time. This is a really, really good hack. A sign of a great game is when you never want it to end, and that was the case with the original Super Metroid. This hack looks like an entirely new game. It still has the feel of Super Metroid and is bigger. The difficulty has been increased with some things. You have to wall jump more. Anyhow it's like playing your favorite game again for the first time, and if you are in any way a Super Metroid fan you owe it to yourself to check it out.

I'm not posting the rom here as I don't want Nintendo coming down on AA. You can get it yourself.

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/131/

This is the website that holds the patch for the rom. Download it and unzip it. Inside are two patches and a readme. Open the readme and it tells you were to get the patch joiner (Lunar IPS), and also the password to unzip the two patch files. Next you need the rom for Super Metroid. There are a hundred websites out there, but make sure you get the Japanese (JU) version. The patches don't work with the European (E) version. You can tell what version you have already if you just fire up the rom in your emulator. The Japanese version gives you the option of reading text in English or Japanese, and the European version gives you the option of reading text in German or French. Make a backup copy of your Super Metroid rom and keep it in a different place before you join it (just in case). Now join the rom with Lunar IPS. Only one of the patches worked for me. I recommend you just join the one that says Metroid_Redesign_Header. Enjoy! :)

I HATE WALLJUMPING! DIE YOU STUPID WALLJUMP GOBLINS AND YOUR DAMNED PIT FROM HELL! IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO BOMB-JUMP OUT OF THAT CESSPOOL OF CRAPPINESS, WHICH WAS STILL INFINITELY FASTER THAN WALLJUMPING!

DIE DIE DIE! RARGH!

Seriously, HAVING to use the walljump guarantees I will NEVER touch this hack. I can't do a walljump in Super Metroid with any regularity.

Pity, since I was genuinely interested.

Also the US version.

Since Metroid isn't very popular in Japan, they didn't bother to make a new game for the J release, they just slapped an option into the US version for japanese subtitles on the intro(in stark contrast to Fusion, where they spent signifigant effort improving it for the J release). It even defaults to off.

Unless your ROM image doesn't have a copier header. Then you want Metroid_Redesign_NoHeader, or whatever they called it.

For the record, modern emulators will patch the ROM image in RAM at runtime, so you never have to alter the original file. Just match the patch name and the ROM image name(SuperMetroid.SMC and SuperMetroid.IPS, for example), and when you run SuperMetroid.SMC, it will also load the patch, until you rename a file or delete the patch.

Yep did I ever tell the story of how I bought S Metroid in Japan very shortly after it's launch.... for 9 bucks? :-o Yeah I guess I have. It's pretty crazy how they dont care about the game all that much to the point it was discounted so much so early.

Didn't you spot the secret tunnel exit about one-third up the shaft? :?

Anyhow, I always wait until I have the Space Jump before venturing inside that part of Brinstar in SM. It makes wall-jumping an obsolete technique, and that always puts a smile on my face, 'cause I could never pull off a wall-jump more than twice in a row. :)

I don't remember anymore. I probably did, but wanted the powerup at the top.

That WOULD be the logical thing to do.

YAY SPACE JUMP!

I tried the hack for a few minutes, and from what little I've seen, it's really fine work. It actually feels a little like the Super-NES version of Metroid II, in a way. I couldn't get very far because my PC gamepad is busted, and playing SM with a keyboard is like trying to play a complicated piece on a piano with only two fingers. :P

I wonder why ZSNES can't play this hack correctly like SNES9X can...

You just have to learn more skills JB like nunchaku skills, computer hacking skills, wall jumping skills... Chicks dig guys with skills. :P

I couldn't wall jump to save my life. After playing this game off and on for two days I've gotten a lot better. The key to it is you got to face the opposite direction and then press fire a little later. Most of the time when you fall it is because you press the fire button too early. It takes practice, lots of it, but it does get easier.

Has anyone found the bombs yet? No spoilers here, but I'm stuck in an area where you need to bomb out and I can't find them. NE146, did you play this yet?

I strongly suspect that my Super Metroid wall-jump skills will never be a determining factor in any relationship of any sort.

...

Unless I'm speed-running the game against said female.

Well, after trying my best to make progress with this hack, I have to call it quits.

The game being very linear (at first anyway), I couldn't find any way to avoid having to enter the room with the Wall Jump Boots, and in order to escape that room, you have to wall-jump your way up a very long shaft, and since I've never been able to perform the wall-jump more than twice in a row, I'm stuck there with no hope of ever getting out.

I could practice like crazy and try to master the wall-jump technique, but I'm not about to waste the D-Pad of my PC gamepad, which I bought just a couple of weeks ago, on such an endeavour.

I find it funny how the guy behind this hack doesn't offer any way to contact him, other than trying to catch him on some obscure IRC channel. It's like he knew that a lot of people would get stuck in his hack and he made sure few people will bother him about it. I can't help but ask the question: Why spend so much time on a hack that alienates a significant segment of the Metroid fanbase?

My final verdict: This hack stinks, despite its overall quality, and I recommend to everyone to avoid it unless you can do wall-jumps in your sleep, which from what I could gather is rather unlikely.

My wall jumping isn't too shabby, but even I rebelled at all the wall-jumping of this hack. Super Metroid is a justly-considered classic, but even the classics can't be perfect, as shown by the unreliable wall-jump. Metroid Fusion is superior in this regard. Ninja Gaiden and Batman could have shown Nintendo how to pull it off.
