Gabriel #1 Posted June 20, 2006 Is there any modern equivalent to the old Odyssey 2 Quest for the Rings game? In some ways, Soul Calibur II's weapon master mode replicates some of the feel of Quest for the Rings, but is there anything that is actually multi-player with a turn based strategy board and an action based competitive or cooperative tactical section? I mean, if Archon got remade as Wrath: The Unleashed, then why not Quest for the Rings?

jbanes #3 Posted June 20, 2006 Is there any modern equivalent to the old Odyssey 2 Quest for the Rings game? Mario Party? In some ways, Soul Calibur II's weapon master mode replicates some of the feel of Quest for the Rings, but is there anything that is actually multi-player with a turn based strategy board and an action based competitive or cooperative tactical section? Definitely Mario Party. Do you know how much strategy is involved in a 3 on 1 minigame?!?
Flojomojo #4 Posted June 20, 2006 Because no sane person wants to play a video game and a board game at the same time. Nonsense. Every real-time strategy game out there is a video game combined with a board game. Dune, Red Alert, Return Fire, Starcraft, and so on and on and on. Like Archon (first remade as Unholy War, BTW), you wouldn't need to have a physical board with today's graphical capabilities. I for one would love a remake of The Quest for the Rings, but anyone making one would be in immediate legal trouble because of the Tolkien franchises. Better to console yourself with some of the Lord of the Rings games. It's not like there's a shortage of them out there. The graphics on the new games are just a little bit better than those of the Odyssey 2.

NovaXpress #6 Posted June 20, 2006 Right. We don't need boards anymore because the boards are better represented on the screen. PC games were doing it before QFTR. So there's tons of choices there.
Lord Thag #7 Posted June 24, 2006 Right. We don't need boards anymore because the boards are better represented on the screen. PC games were doing it before QFTR. So there's tons of choices there. I'll agree that the board game/video game combo is iffy, however, I still love a good board game. My brother and I still get in a game of Axis and Allies, Warhammer, or Doom (the boardgame) once in awhile. In many ways, board games are just as fun. Maybe it's the whole pizza and pretzel community thing, but I still like 'em. That being said, Quest for the Rings might make for a fun homebrew project. Flojomojo #8 Posted March 18, 2013 Coming back to this thread after almost seven years, I see that no one has made this particular game. Wouldn't it be great to see a quickie port to mobile devices?
Pixelboy #9 Posted March 18, 2013 That being said, Quest for the Rings might make for a fun homebrew project. That's a nice idea. One could create an Atari 2600 cartridge equivalent to the Odyssey-2 software, and reuse the same physical board, pieces and equipment from the original Odyssey-2 game. So the player would just need to buy the Atari cart, and track down a complete copy of the Odyssey-2 game. Could be done on ColecoVision and Intellivision too, I suppose.
