New Acquisition: Colecovision

Recommended Posts

The new addition got here yesterday. I finally own a Colecovision.

I owned an ADAM as a teen, but it just fell apart all within a couple of months. First the datasette drive gave out. Then it stopped playing Colecovision carts. Finally, something scrambled so bad that even the built in typewriter thing could no longer be used, and the system would lock up completely whenever it was powered on. I never had many games for it back then. My whole library was: Dragons Lair (datasette), Buck Rogers (datasette), War Room, and Nova Blast. I used to borrow Frenzy and Venture from a buddy as much as I possibly could.

Anyway, now it's here and all I have to play on it so far is Donkey Kong. The controllers suck as much as I remember.

Now, what will the next one be? Commodore 64? Odyssey 2? Vectrex? Atari XE GS?

Theres no doubt the controllers suck, but I've recently adjusted to them and they're not as bad once you get used to them. As long as you stick with games that only require one fire button you can play the games pretty easily. A lot of really good games are ruined by the positioning of the fire buttons on theopposite side of the controller. Cosmic Avenger would be awesome but its impossible to maneuver your ship, and fire both buttons.

I've ben playing LOTS of Frenzy, Venture, and Gorf lately. You definetly need to get some good games. If all you have is Donkey Kong, you'll get bored quickly. I also got Tapper recently, and its pretty kick-ass! Lots of decent cheap games available.

First time i played CV, i was afraid i was going to break the controller. A friend assured me not to worry about cranking down on the controller, that's simply how they're designed to be used.

For most single button games, Montezumas expecially, I plug in the WICO from the 2600.

While we're on this topic, did anyone make aftermarket controllers besides the Super Actions that we're designed to ONLY be used on the CV?

The official CV sports controller (the joystick) is awesome. They're not too expensive and make the CV 100x more playable, imho.

[Edit] maybe it's called the Super Action controller - I can never remember the official name of the CV joystick. Whatever it is, it's cool.

I was going to recommend Ladybug, but after seeing it only scored a “C” on the list, maybe not. It’s still one of my favourite CV games though.

Thanks for the link Jess, it’s great.

Vectrex.

Sure, get a Vectrex if you have the cash. If you want to ease the strain on your wallet, get an O2.

Despite the opinion of many an Atarian, the best of its catalog is incredibly playable and cheap to boot.
