elviticus #1 Posted June 30, 2006 Here's a question for street fighter fans... For the PS2, what do you think is the best controller? Obviously the dual shock isn't it. I have a S.F. anniversary pad - a little better, but not what I'd call great. I also have an Arcade Rex joystick - again, just OK for this type of game. I've seen that there is an S.F. anniversary stick available - anyone have one of these? Is it worth getting? My only reservation is that it looks huge and heavy. Other sticks I've been looking at are the "ultimate fighting stick" wireless by Naki (I think) and the King of Fighters stick. Any advice would be helpful. On a side note, I LOVE the neo geo pocket controller and find that it is an excellent controller for S.F. type games.... Or maybe they're just really easy on that system - I don't know! +FujiSkunk #2 Posted June 30, 2006 I have an X-Arcade 2-player controller that works very well for fighting games, both on the PC and the PS2.
Jagasian #3 Posted July 6, 2006 If you are OK with using a full sized arcade controller, then buy one that is made using an actual arcade joystick and arcade buttons. I don't know of exact brands, but the good ones tend to support multiple systems via interchangable cables. Again, it is important to get a joystick that uses real arcade parts, as these parts are built for durability, reliability, and accuracy. If the joystick makes a clicking sound when you make a circular motion, it is not a good joystick. Similarly, buttons should not making a clicking sound either. This is because the best arcade equipment uses leaf switches. They are a bit harder to get tweaked and tuned in the beginning, but they will last nearly forever if you take care of them. If you want something small, then a good D-pad only gamepad is your best bet. The best PS2 D-pad only gamepad is the Sega Saturn style PS2 controller. When it comes to D-pad only gaming, most PS2 gamepads suck hard.
JB #4 Posted July 6, 2006 (edited) Again, it is important to get a joystick that uses real arcade parts, as these parts are built for durability, reliability, and accuracy. This is because the best arcade equipment uses leaf switches. They are a bit harder to get tweaked and tuned in the beginning, but they will last nearly forever if you take care of them. Actually, leaf switch arcade parts haven't been made for many years now because they're too high-maintainence. The lack of clicking in arcades is just because there's a lot of background noise drowning it out. If I recall, 8-way leaf-switch sticks also tend to lack a solid feel for the directions in favor of a circular feel. They'd be a very questionable call for a fighting controller, where very precise directional control is required. There's supposed to be some good StreetFighter-centric advice in the forums at shoryuken.com but I'm not sure exactly where. If you want something small, then a good D-pad only gamepad is your best bet. The best PS2 D-pad only gamepad is the Sega Saturn style PS2 controller. When it comes to D-pad only gaming, most PS2 gamepads suck hard. No argument here. Especially on the last sentence. I've heard the PS2 NeoGeo pads are good too, but they're hard to find. And less, shall we say, conventional, than a Saturn pad, since they actually use a digital thumbstick instead of a pad. The PS2 NeoGeo STICKS would be a poor choice for Street Fighter, since they maintain the NeoGeo's straight-4 layout, but the pads have a Saturn layout. elviticus #6 Posted July 6, 2006 I would like an arcade style stick... my only reservation is the size/weight, since I don't have a table to put it on- might not be too comfortable to sit with. Who makes the Saturn style PS2 controller? Not sure if I've seen that.

Also seems to be out of production. http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/CS1-0007.html still has it.
