jferio #1 Posted July 2, 2006 As a curiousity, what thing would you, upon encountering it in the wild, or in a store, spend whatever it took to acquire, even if it meant, say, eating ramen for a month? Right now, my Holy Grail is the PS1 game Bust a Groove, which is a fighting game where you outdance your opponent.
AussieAtari #2 Posted July 2, 2006 Right now it is a mint condition Vectrex with games in boxes all complete. After that it will be a complete and all working Apple IIc.
Dave Farquhar #3 Posted July 2, 2006 An Amiga, preferrably an A1000, autographed by Jay Miner on the outside of the case. Triply so if it were personalized "To Dave" or "To David." Since he died in 1994, he isn't signing any more of them. But if I found any pre-Commodore Amiga stuff, like a Joyboard or Powerstick, in the wild, it would certainly make my week. Maybe my month. And I know if I saw an Amiga 1200, I'd pay probably any price that was listed on it. I always have wanted one of those, even since it was new. The Jay Miner rule applies if it's signed by ex-CBM engineer Dave Haynie.
SteveW #4 Posted July 2, 2006 (edited) Right now it is a mint condition Vectrex with games in boxes all complete. Sadly, I missed out on a deal like that earlier this year. I decided to hit my local flea market one Saturday, but I, being lazy, got off to a really late start. I got there around 2pm and didn't find much of anything. I usually hit the collector guy's booth at the far end of the market before I go, and the owner of the booth showed off his latest aquisition: a boxed Vectrex with 14 boxed and complete games. Someone at the flea market was selling it that morning, so he snatched it up. He wouldn't tell me how much he paid for it, so I'm guessing it was very cheap. He sold it all off on eBay, for what I'm sure was a nice chunk of change. I've got a lot of 'Holy Grails'. A PC Engine module for my Pioneer LaserActive, a Texas Instruments 99/8 Home Computer prototype (rumored between 150-250 of them floating around out there, in the hands of ex-TI employees and hardcore TI-99/4A enthusiasts), a Neo-Geo console with a heap of games, an RDI Halcyon console/computer, a SMS set of 3D glasses that are actually complete and working, and maybe some of the late '70s and early '80s oddball consoles like the Fairchild Channel F and the Emerson Arcadia 2001. I've already fulfilled one of my greatest desires, I bought a Milton Bradley eXpansion system (MBX) for my TI Home Computer. That was a good day, i've gotta tell you. christianscott27 #7 Posted July 2, 2006 An Adventurevision, its beyond rare and expensive but yet it was widely sold so its not like it could never happen. Its pretty much the only classic system I dont own and man I would just be beside myself to find one of these. I've had a couple grail finds like the minicade and one of the most intense feelings is the urge to go brag about it in places like this

christianscott27 #11 Posted July 3, 2006 You've got a Minicade? Holy poop-on-a-stick! If I were you, I'd brag about that in every single post I made here. sure, i try to every once in awhile. it gets worse, i found one, and then i found another one! i had the 2nd and 3rd ones discovered. the first was at a flea market for $75 and i carried it home on the bus and two subway lines. the 2nd was at an old coin-op shop and it was i think $50. i help a vec.newsgroup auction for #2 and it went for $750 IIRC. a few years back some guy found 5 of them rain damaged but thats another story. Narifia #12 Posted July 3, 2006 My Holy Grail would certainly be a working copy of Werewolf: The Last Warrior. I *HAD* ordered one just a few days ago, at the sweet price of only $1.77 plus shipping, BUT the people at Classic Gaming Source noobed around with my order and it somehow went out of stock AFTER I'd paid them the money -_-'... Another Holy Grail would be any of the Bloody Roar games for the Playstation and PS2. Those are just awesome looking games, and I'm a lover of the Street Figther type games anyway Finally I'd have to say, an Atari Lynx II and a good stack of games to go with it. I could probably find a decent one online, but money prohibits me now xD
AussieAtari #13 Posted July 3, 2006 For some reason Atari Lynx II come up regularly on eBay.com.au, usually with games and for between AUD$20 to AUD$30.

Cheese007 #15 Posted July 3, 2006 Boxed VB with all the manuals and bags. Was mint before I got my hands on it. I unforutunantly bent the tub, scratched the stand, put a small tear in the box when I was putting the tub back, bent the box, and to top it all off partially peeled the sticker. Still in good shape for a VB though and it sounds worse than it looks. Was only used twice before I got it. I also gave my best effort to preserve it, even though it sounds like I was careless. My other grail is my also once brand new Saturn Analouge pad I got for $10. I still have original everything down to the twist tyes even after using it. phil_vr #16 Posted July 3, 2006 I got my Holy Grail (sort of), but I guess I could squeeze it a little bit more. Say, my Videopac G7000 boxed the way I have it since 1980, but sealed! I guess a sealed one would be the only difference between mine and a new found one. Oh, and I wouldnt mind a complete collection of the Videopac boxed games including their + versions.. I guess this is worthy enough to starve for a real long time!!!
joeymcdonald #17 Posted July 3, 2006 I have been collecting for a VERY long time and I can tell you that finding GOOD items in the wild is quite difficult anymore. As far as finding a "holy grail" in the wild (which most likely isn't going to happen), I'd like to find the original "brown" Intellivision computer adapter. For me, when I began collecting this stuff "as collectibles" most of the fun was the SEARCH. Today, there just isn't that much stuff floating around in the wild to make "the search" all that fun anymore. A note regarding rarity and the WILD; just because an item is rated as "common" in a guide doesn't mean that it isn't going to be a difficult item to add to your collection if you're mainly hunting in the wild. In the "old days" I had added many extremely rare titles to my collection before some of the more common ones. For those who are new to collecting and are new "hunters" in the wild, you have no idea how much better (and more fun) the scene was, say.... 15 years ago! I can recall "passing" on an RDI Halcyon with a couple games for about $60 about 14 years ago. Bummer! You don't want to hear about some of the holy grails I held in my hands and "passed" on hehehe. shadow460 #18 Posted July 3, 2006 Virtual On: Operation Moongate Gold Edition. It was sold for a very brief time on a 24K gold PC CD-ROM. I don't even know what the system requirements were, but I imagine all of my computers would meet them. Got a holy grail find myself the other day in Tengen Tetris. Hmmm, Shining Force III and PDS in the wild (not ebay), FFVIII for PC in the wild, those would be awesome finds.

I doubt I'll ever get one of those... or an actual display stand... but something similar to the mincade could be made (without the timing restrictions of course. I may consider doing this... throw a multi-cart in there... and it would be a great way to display an extra vectrex.

If you visit pawnshops that still have selections of PSone games... they generally will have this game. I've found 4... or 5 in the last few months. My weak point right now is Tubro Grafx games. My left arm will be given for a huge stack of them. It kills me to think about the one I was going to get and while on my way to an ATM... the guy at the flea market sold it... EVEN though I gave him cash to hold it for me while I ran to an ATM a block away. There were TONS of good games in there. TONS. I think there was around 50 games total. SIGH....
