Dave Farquhar #1 Posted July 5, 2006 In the same spirit as the best NES two-player games thread, I was wondering what people think the best two-player games are for the 2600? My wife and I enjoy playing Freeway together a lot, and we play Surround. And of course there's the ubiquitous Combat. I know there were tons more. What are some of your favorites? super_dos_man #4 Posted July 5, 2006 Indy 500, no doubt. hell yeah! ( I haven't played that in years though)
NovaXpress #6 Posted July 5, 2006 M.A.D. is a unique experience. I think that few people know about their player-vs-player oprion wherin one of the players controls the attacking space fleet. Demons to Diamonds is almost tolerable as a two-player game. M Network had saome goodies: Armor Attack is a lot more interesting than combat. For those who want to name-drop Party Mix: few people own a freaking supercharger.
kencrisis #7 Posted July 5, 2006 Fall Down and Warlords
Lord Helmet #8 Posted July 5, 2006 Gunfight, Combat, and Warlords...although for Warlords to be really special, you need 4 players
vdub_bobby #9 Posted July 5, 2006 (edited) My brother and I enjoyed playing M-4 together. Edited July 5, 2006 by vdub_bobby
Foxsolo2000 #10 Posted July 5, 2006 Combat hands down. Indy 500 close second although my wife and I love to play Sky Diver in two player mode and even Home Run
128bytes #11 Posted July 5, 2006 For those who want to name-drop Party Mix: few people own a freaking supercharger. [namedropping] I play Party Mix and I don't own a freaking supercharger.... ...But I do own a Cuttle Cart 2, which plays all supercharger games. Party Mix rocks. But it belongs in the "Best 2600 FOUR player games" category. [/namedropping] My favorite 2600 two-player games, if I limit myself to the top 2, are Mario Bros. and Joust. candiru #12 Posted July 5, 2006 Frogs and Flies hasn't been mentioned yet. My wife enjoys that one and she doesn't really care for most Atari games. Indy 500 of course. I actually find the dot and tag games more fun than racing. M*A*S*H is a good one too.
Dave Farquhar #13 Posted July 5, 2006 Thanks for the suggestions so far. And if anyone else has any others, thanks in advance!
+Nathan Strum #14 Posted July 5, 2006 Not mentioned yet: A personal favorite of mine was M-Network's Super Challenge Baseball. Activision's Tennis and Hockey are also good head-to-head games. I also got a kick out of playing Air-Sea Battle with my sister, since it was one of the first games I owned. The worst? Star Wars: Jedi Arena.
Big Player #15 Posted July 6, 2006 For those who want to name-drop Party Mix: few people own a freaking supercharger. [namedropping] I play Party Mix and I don't own a freaking supercharger.... ...But I do own a Cuttle Cart 2, which plays all supercharger games. Party Mix rocks. But it belongs in the "Best 2600 FOUR player games" category. [/namedropping] Aside from having to own a Supercharger, Party Mix is scarce among the Starpath games. I have the game on my Stella Gets A New Brain CD. Party Mix has always been the unknown 2600 multiplayer game. I had not given Party Mix a try until I had Stan Jr and pitfallaimee over to my place last summer. We always play Warlords when we get together. It plays fine with three, once the green computer controlled player dies in the first ten seconds. So we really looked forward to trying out Party Mix. (I had forgot to bring my CD when I was last visiting them in Louisville.) Here is what we learned in our research. Heavy stress on the FOUR player aspect of Party Mix. All of the games divide the players up into teams of two. The third player has nothing to do, we tried alter the rules to make it somewhat fun with three and coudn't come up with anything. So if you have three players or fewer, you can pass on playing Party Mix. You can play the games with only two players, but there are a lot better two player 2600 games mentioned in this thread. +kisrael #17 Posted July 6, 2006 Just to toot my own horn, one of the favorite 2600 deathmatches I've seen at New England Classic Gamers was my own "JoustPong"/"Flapping". It's a surprisingly complex game, and it can get pretty heated.
kencrisis #18 Posted July 6, 2006 Pong, Mario Bros, Centepede co-op. There's a co-op version in Centipede? I thought there were just two game versions: easy and standard. Just checked my manual and that's what it says.
Godzilla #19 Posted July 6, 2006 best 2600 two player game ever: Entombed. It's head to head. It's co-op. However you want to play it. 'nother really fun one: Quick Step I'll also second nova on MAD, that game really surprised me!
BrianC #20 Posted July 6, 2006 (edited) Pong, Mario Bros, Centepede co-op. There's a co-op version in Centipede? I thought there were just two game versions: easy and standard. Just checked my manual and that's what it says. He's probably thinking of the 7800 Centipede, which does have co-op. The 2600 version doesn't have co-op. As for two player games, I like Air Sea Battle, Canyon Bomber, Combat, Space War, Joust, Mario Bros, Warlords (I love the doubles mode), and Slot Racers. Lord Thag #21 Posted July 6, 2006 Well, Maze Craze is outsanding two player fun. I also like Armor Ambush, Surround (stupid but fun), Fall Down, Combat, and Indy 500. My personal favorite two player game is Warlords. With four people, I can still play that game for hours.

TomBrazil #23 Posted July 8, 2006 Hey! What's the problem with Air-Sea Battle? Nobody to vote on it? I can't be blamed for playing it with my father when I was a kid... So I kinda like it! BTW, Indy 500 is awesomely cool!
Dave Farquhar #24 Posted July 9, 2006 The only two-player game my wife or I scored this week was Joust (she found that one), but I was glad to score the handful of carts we did get. I do think we have a Slot Racers cart somewhere though. I'd forgotten about that one.
Student Driver #25 Posted July 9, 2006 Entombed... I didn't really like this one until I played it with a friend.
