Bad news for Google Checkout hopefuls.

Recommended Posts

I think a lot of sellers will use it without actually advertising it, since you have to go off site and use a regular credit card anyway. It will just slide right into the big sellers checkout process with no need to shout about it in the listing.

I think this could work in our favor and eventually create more competition.

Right now, Google is focused on being a Microsoft killer, but that's not really the arena they compete in. They are an online software company, not a desktop, server, or workplace application provider.

Their google checkout is like the MSN Wallet service that Microsoft has. The MS wallet service really hasn't cought on, so I don't understand why Google went that way with their offering -- they're chasing a somewhat dead market (well, hopefully, they can make something of it).

If Google concentrated their efforts on making an auction site and a p2p payment site, much like the eBay + Paypal combination, they would offer some real competition in an arena they are good at -- online applications. I think they would gain a lot more success this way, as well as attract a lot of initial customers that are tired of being bullied by eBay's policies.

And with eBay saying "no google payments", to me, it seems to add fuel to the fire on why Google should go after them.

Well, only time will tell...

To me, ebay has a good enough reason not to include google checkout

Yea, to protect their investment in Paypal...

I knew this was gonna happen. I call it a monopoly.

Absolutely. If eBay somehow limits use of another service, it will only be temporary, as there are always class actions suits to prevent this kind of monopolistic behavior, especially with a service so widely abhored as paypal. Paypal SUCKS!

It's hard because Google gets some hundreds of millions in revenue from eBay, so they don't want to step on their toes. There is alot of blog about this increasingly strained relationship.

I say, DOWN WITH eBay! Or at least up with some healthy competition. Any market ruled by one company means monopolistic practices will ensue. If someone can challenge eBay, they'll likely end up dropping fees and improving service to stay competitive.

Google needs to realize that the income they loose from eBay will be more than made up for by their own offerings.
