I looooooooooooove the dreamcast. I picked one up yesterday along with a game gear. I have been playing crazy taxi for four hours straight so far! does anyone still play online for dreamcast? (If so, I will buy the modem)

The short answer is no. Sega's servers AFAIK are now closed and there's not the interest any more. I daresay that some enterprising souls have figured out a way to run PSO on a private server, but it'd be a hell of a job to find it I expect.

I must get my Dreamcast up and running again. I miss Crazy Taxi, the Acclaim PS2 and GC ports just don't cut it, it has to be the original.

Last I heard (years ago) some people were still running quake 3 and PSO. The chances those private servers are still up however.....

I just came back from the Dreamcast General forum at Gamefaqs. They have a sticky about Dreamcast online gaming. They say that there are still servers running PSO, Quake III and other games. Just go there and ask questions if nobody here can help.

i dont think you realize that the modem is part of the system

its the right back corner of the dreamcast, its part of the casing, and is detachable...

I love my DC. Great graphics, super cool controller + memory card, tons of fun games, it was the first with a built-in modem, cool design...

Who needs a PS2 or Xbox? :P

If he got the machine second-hand, there's always a possibility that the previous owner took the modem out for some reason. I keep finding N64's at thrift stores with empty memory expansion ports for some reason (At least the Dreamcast can be used without a modem... without at least a jumper pack in the N64's port, it won't even boot)

i love my dreamcast as well.. and it it tied with my saturn with the most games for any system that i own. I loved the dreamcast so much, i bought it with the credit i got at gamestop from my unwanted ps2 with the 25 games i had.. that left plenty of money for a system and games, plus some games for the gamecube which i had just gotten. I liked the dreamcast more than my ps2 for many reasons, but one major one was the laughable dead or alive on ps2, which looked worse than the dreamcast version... those hands that dont look like they are really attached to the arms lool.

and ive never seen an n64 without a memory pack thing, or a dreamcast without the modem for sale. ill have to look for that, thast very very weird.

Resellers harvest the jumper and expansion paks.. there is a salvage store in London Ont. with what appears to be ~200 N64's - none of which have the paks...

When i got my orginal dreamcast 2 years ago it didnt have a modem it just had a piece attached where the modem would be with nothing on it. It also turned out that it was Japanese system ,but i bought it used from a US EB store (weird) then after that went on the fritz i got a used one from a store called Cash In Culture for 25 bux ,and it was a US one with a modem. Everything on it worked much better than my old one. Except i think the internal battery is dying. i noticed everytime i boot it up after not playing for a few months it asks for time.

I just recently rehooked up my Dreamcast (my current setup 360..Gamecube...Dreamcast) The dreamcast had some really good stuff. its just sad it never lived on to have 2nd wave of games. Everything is first gen. the 2nd gen stuff was looking real good ( well for that time at least) Soul Reaver 2...Max Payne...Castlevania...Planet Harriers...Geist Force ,and etc

About one out of every three N64's I come across has nothing in the expansion port. Unless you count air, that is.

About one in twenty have the expansion pak, and I've only seen two with the official Nintendo Expansion Pak.

I recently bought a Jumper Pak for my own N64. Mine is one of the very few I've seen with the Nintendo Expansion Pak, but I wanted a Jumper Pak for completeness.

I recently picked up a green (!!!) N64 with a black Jumper Pack that still has the warning label on it.

Not like I've been paying attention, though, to who's selling N64's with what hardware installed, though. I haven't got my head far enough out to really notice... :ponder:

IIRC, a number of things could be present in the DC's "modem port". I've heard of some having the plastic filler (probably just Japanese ones), of course the modem, and I also read that's where the DVD upgrade was supposed to go, and it had a pass through port for the modem to be installed atop it.

@Zoop: That is actually normal behavior for the Dreamcast. Fair warning--do NOT leave your controllers plugged in with the system turned off. It'll drain the VMU batteries and cause this annoying beep when the systems starts. Your save files will be fine, but the beep is not pleasant.

I don't know I kinda like the beep. Its like my DC alarm. I love the whole startup of the DC... I think I will go play.....

This should turn into a DC appreciation thread. Its the Van Gogh of game systems, not fully appreciated until it was dead. :(

Yeah, the Dreamcast systems released in other territories have no modems. That was a bonus for American gamers... I guess Sega thought it would help move systems in this country and strengthen the user base of their online service. I can't imagine how well games would play with a humble dial-up modem, though. There was an ethernet peripheral for the Dreamcast, but it was even more expensive and difficult to find than the one for the GameCube!

And because it's rambus, they won't work without the jumper pak, which is the bus terminator. It's also way too easy to remove at a store. You can pop it out with a regular car key. In fact, I do that whenever I find an N64 in a thrift store just in case it might be a RAM pak. (I already have a couple of extra jumper paks and don't want any more.)

Still, it's a bit more obvious when the DC modem is missing, because it forms part of the case shell. (or there could be the unlikely case of it being swapped for a BBA, which is worth at least two or three times as much as the DC console itself)

Long live the DC and all those who love them!

I'll have to have a look tonight to see if the Oz release DC has the modem inbuilt, although from memory I don't think it does.

What are the favourite light gun games and the best gun? I have the Mad Catz gun and it is okay but not brilliant. My local Game Traders has another gun with a D pad on the side and I was curious to know what it was and if it is better?
