Asteroids- any tips?

Hi all, Im new here. Anyway, do any of you have tips on the playing of Asteroids? I recently found a 2600 4 switch "vader" in my grandmothers basement, found this game with it, my favorite out of the bunch. Anyway, any tips?

Don't fly horizontally. The asteroids move in mostly vertical patterns, so when you move away from the middle of the screen the danger to your ship increases dramatically.

 

Always try to stay in the center of the screen.

 

Sometimes, when the UFOs come out and you aim straight sideways to hit them, your bullets go through them. So, shooting UFOs from diagonals or verticals is preferable.

 

If you aren't in the middle of the screen, definitely don't shoot the last asteroid.

 

Your ship is bigger than it looks. Remember that when an asteroid is flying by.

 

Using Shields against a large asteroid generally doesn't work.

A few more tips.

 

If you're just looking to rack up some points, you can leave a single asteroid on the field, and simply pick off the enemy satellites and UFOs as they appear. Just remember the advice about sticking to the middle of the screen. Otherwise you'll be in big trouble if you're on the edge of the screen and an enemy ship happens to shoot or ram the last asteroid.

 

The game gets easy in a hurry, so don't forget about the game variations. My favorite is "fast" asteroids with an extra life every 20,000.

also do not use the shields for more than a sec or two or your ship blows up.

Yeah.. my biggest tip (and to reiterate what skunkworx said) is to play the EVEN numbered varations in 2600 Asteroids (i.e. game 2, 4, 6, 8, etc.)

 

Otherwise it's just bullshit since the asteroids start to the left & right of you and they only move up and down! That's probably one of the worst things about 2600 Asteroids. The "Fast" variation somewhat takes care of that since it allows some of the smaller asteroids to have a diagonal trajectory. As to why they called it "fast".. who the hell knows. It's friggin misnamed.

 

Oh yeah, and make sure you put your difficulty switches to "A" to allow UFO's.

 

I don't know how many times I've watched people play Asteroids on the odd # variations with no UFO's. Why the heck even bother playing?

Dont use hyperspace for 9 times out of 10 you will end up in a whole world of pain

You know, I was just about to make a smartass reply along the lines of "Here's a tip - play U.F.O.!"

 

The others are right about how to get more out of Asteroids.
