Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator at home

Recommended Posts

Anyone other than me like Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator? I loved the game when I first saw it in the arcade back in the day. When I got my Atari 5200, I begged until someone (my aunt) bought me the cartridge. Later, I happened upon the 2600 version. Those two weren't quite like the arcade (they had docking levels and photons were straight line weapons), but I still enjoyed them quite a bit.

Here recently, I've discovered the Colecovision version of the game. It plays much more like the arcade game. I've also noticed there is, at least, a TI-99/4A version of the game.

How many systems was this game ported to? Does anyone have any preference as to version?

Of the three versions I currently have, I like them all for different reasons. The 5200 version is an old favorite and feels fun. The 2600 version is like a faster version of the 5200 port (although it's probably that the 5200 version is a slower port of the 2600 version). And the Colecovision version has some nice sound and is just closer to the arcade (but WHY?? didn't they provide autofire for the phasers?? GAH!!)

There's an Atari 800 version of the game which is in all likelihood identical to the 5200 game, and there's a Vectrex version of the game, if I remember. And it looks like it came out for the VIC-20 and Commodore 64, too. It seems that an Intellivision version was in development, but didn't make it out before the market collapse.

There's a Vectrex Star Trek game, but it's a unique exclusive, not a port of the Sega game.

I used to love the 4a version, but I haven't played it in a long time.

The TI-99/4A version uses the voice synthesizer module. I've heard that on later levels it gets completely confused and starts babbling for the level announcement.
