2600lover #1 Posted July 13, 2006 (edited) Hi guys, me again! I was looking to purchase a used system from atari2600.com and wanted to know OUT OF THE 2600, 5200, AND 7800 what is the best one in your opinoin? (doubt I spelled that right, lol) Im kind of interested in the 7800, looks really cool and from the screen shots I've seen the graphics look good! I've also seen online that it plays 2600 carts? Is this true? If it is it would save me some $$$$$!! Please help!! Edited July 13, 2006 by 2600lover
George35 #2 Posted July 13, 2006 The 5200 is my favorite, but some people find it a hard system to love. If this is your first Atari, I'd go with the 7800 since you'll have two libraries of games to choose from. You may want to pick up some cx-40 (2600) joysticks or 7800 joypads, since most people don't care for the 7800 proline joysticks.
Gabriel #3 Posted July 13, 2006 If money is no object and you're not after a particular style, then it would be hard to go wrong with a 7800. It plays almost all the 2600 games, plus there are a few 7800 specific games to keep you busy. The 5200 is a love it or hate it system. The 5200 is a lot like a fussy girlfriend. She wants you to spend lots of money maintaining her. She requires constant attention. She's not very friendly to the idea of you having other systems (due to the hookups and space required for the system). But she looks hot, and she knows quite a few ways to have fun (thanks to the 8 bit conversion homebrewers). Oh, and she likes toys. As a 5200 gamer you'll probably be looking at things like modified controllers, third party controlers, controller adaptors, track balls, and stuff like that to spice up your gaming. As for the 2600, few things say "retrogamer" quite as loudly. 2600s are solid and dependable. They come in a variety of styles (even more if you include clones like the Telegames and Gemini models). It's just that you can gain access to the library through the 7800. So, I'd say the main reason for one is for a particular look you'd want.
Lemmi #4 Posted July 13, 2006 get the 7800 it plays 2 different systems games with no added hardware you can use 2600 controllers or the 7800 controllers STAY AWAY FROM THE 5200
2600lover #5 Posted July 13, 2006 There we go, thanks guys I think Im gonna have to save up the $70 + S&H (aprox $10-$15) and go w/ the 7800.
Lemmi #6 Posted July 13, 2006 can you use ebay? you might be able to get a cheaper system what do you get for the $70 from 2600.com? just the complete system alone?
ATARIPITBULL #7 Posted July 13, 2006 Yes, you more than likely could get a complete 7800 system with some games for less than that. A few years ago, Lemmi hooked me up with a 7800 and about 6 boxed games for way less than $70.00 :!:
Gregory DG #8 Posted July 13, 2006 Get a 7800 which plays 2600 games. If you have any hankering to play 5200 games, you'd be better served by getting an XEGS instead.

Vic George 2K3 #13 Posted July 13, 2006 7800 is definitely the way to go. If you're into doing serious modding, you might want to also get a 5200.

So I guess if they take personal check is my only option, he doesnt have a PayPal or anything like that and hes not to tech savy so........ I buy stuff from ebay all the time without paypal. The post office sells money orders for 95 cents. The 7800 is definately the best way to go. The 5200 costs too much money to upgrade to decent controllers. Also, some of the 7800 games are great (like Centipede)!
