Potential Homebrew-Game looking for music

Recommended Posts

Hello,

some weeks ago Lars (Starcat) and me finally toyed around with some ideas for a new Jag game.

Although it would become a smaller game we believe it would be a nice addition to the existing games

and since it is small it could be done in a relative short time.

But (there always has to be one) before we can do this we need a musician in our team.

Since we want to use CD Audio pretty much all tools could be used.

So if you always wanted to be part of a Jag project and

- can do some (nice) music

- important: have time to do it now

drop a note/pm

don't be shy, give yourself a try

thanks

Holger

Hi TXG/MNX,

I guess all we need is a miracle.

The person Lars had in mind is busy with other projects.

If it weren't that damn hard to find a musician I wouldn't have posted yet

some additional informations to those of you who are still unsure to join ;-)

* it is small but bigger than some kind of pong, space invaders etc.

* levels are small but at least several screens large (scrolling)

* it is no "puzzle game" but some kind of platformer

* setting is a fantasy theme (music should fit!)

right now work is shared:

Lars: game design + doing everything that has to do with graphics/artwork

myself: game design + doing everything that has to do with coding

What is done so far:

* game concept: done

* custom leveleditor: useable and almost done

* gameplay test-environment: useable and almost done

* final graphics: Lars is working on it

what has not been done:

* final jag implementation

* everything sound related

I won't spend much more time in this project when I don't know for sure that we'll get some music soon.

(In the next weeks I have time to do this project but this will change and once I completely stop this project I don't know if I will ever have the time/desire to restart everything.)

Micky:

First of all, I didn't kick you out, we had our arguments during the Star Alliance project and I thought we took seperate ways without bad feelings involved. That's what you we both said, if I remember our e-mail conversation correctly that we had years ago.

But more importantly, this project has nothing to do with Star Alliance or anything we did in the past. There is no team involved besides Holger and me yet.

That's why we are looking for somebody who has game music experience, who can do suitable music for this kind of game and time to help out now.

regards, Lars.

I thought Lars already got another musician in his team since he kicked me out?

Hi Micky,

as Lars said he is doing his projects with other people or on his own but this one is not "his team/project".

In fact I was the one who started this project so it is at least our project.

In this project (the first time we do a jag game together:-) ) we work as a team and it is neither my team nor his team but simply teamwork.

If you are willing to join you can pm me (or Lars) and send some examples so we can discuss further details.

regards,

Holger

Hello Holger,

nice to meet you,

well, please let me know if you need standard stereo 44,1 audio *.AIFF or tracker-tracks like *.MOD

furthermore it would be very helpful if you could explain which type of music is needed in detail, please.

can we expect a more jump n run type of game? so, do you need some music tracks which we can compare with such jaguar releases like "rayman", "zool2" or maybe "attack of the ... penguins"?

(so, do you need the more "funny" or "light" style of electronic music? ... or something like "Flip-Out" which I like very much)

thanx for your response in advance.

regards

micky

Hi Paolo,

I wouldn't call myself "teamleader" but in one way or another there has to be one person

in a project that has the last word to get things done.

Hey fellas.

I also can do game music. Ironically I'll be going to the studio tomorrow night, so I can make up a quick demo mp3 or two, and send it to you. Are you looking for dramatic movie score type stuff, or plucky mario-ish type stuff?

Hi mr jones,

I guess dramatic movie score type stuff won't fit to this game.

Although this game has pretty much nothing to do with it gameplay wise think of castlevania type stuff.

Nothing too dramatic but darker than some kind of mario.

And when you make your music try to have the 4 elements (fire, water, earth, air) in mind since these will take

a major role in the game.

Excellent. I have a few ideas. I was going to post up part of a indie project I had last year, but I'll work on something a bit different tonight.

Holger, do you think you and Lars have what it takes to be the Jag's AM2 team?

Hi JagChris,

I did a quick google search on "AM2 team".

If you mean the professional team who did e.g. Virtua Fighter for Sega then the answer would be no.

The AM2 team are professionals who know their job.

I'm not a pro game developer and haven't released a single game.

Even this small homebrew project isn't finished yet.

An absolutely reasonable response. :)

Been playing some of AM2s greatest hits over the last couple weeks. Just made me curious what homebrew team would in time be considered the Jag's 'best of the best'.

Atari totally lacked anything like that in the developers they hired for the Jag when it was released. Probably Eclipse or Llamasoft were two of the best though.

Why couldn't Atari attract half decent developers? They kept getting Assclowns like Rebellion.

I guess at the moment the most active is the french team (or teams ?).

Only time can tell which homebrew games will be considered the 'best of the best'.

Hi!

I fully agree with what Holger said. Time will tell which releases are later considered the best. Especially because most promising games are still in development. Every new game will be a welcome addition to the Jag's game library that's for sure.

Personally I don't really see Jag dev as competition, so I wouldn't say, one team or developer is better than an other.

But when you are seeing it as a competition, which is another way to see it, I wouldn't just look at how active a team is, but rather how good the final game is. That is what matters most I think.

Regards, Lars.

Probably the AM2 equivalent right now would have to be the Stooges. Scato would be considered that but they aren't in the Jag business anymore.

It's not really a competition I guess.

I am thinking more along the terms of pride of work. Who would agree with me that a lot of the Jag developers in the Jag's day had very little pride or self respect in their work?

It seems like a good chunk of the Jag developers were 'Eh, we're just fiddling around here. Excuses? We got a million of 'em!' We're in no way accountable for the quality you see here!' The developer of Club Drive I'll make an exception for. It seems to me there was just one guy doing everything on that gig. Todd whatshisface. But I could be mistaken.

When I play an AMx game on a Sega system it seems like the designers had pride in what they did. They loved the challenge of it. When you saw an AMx logo before a game started, to me it's like they're saying 'WE take responsibility for the quality here. This is us, balls to the wall. No excuses. Next time we'll be even better. '

They're not the only development team that gives me this impression, but they're the best example I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm sure most all of the professional Jag developers here will have far more pride in their work than the majority of those Atari hired.

Lotta things going on in Jaggy land lately. It's getting kinda exciting. :D

Not really, i suspect the vast majority of Jag developers would have wanted to, and would actually have achieved much better results if they had more time and money than the notoriously cheap Atari were prepared to give them, and had not been subject to all Atari's BS demands for extra tex-mapping, etc

Given the desperate state of Atari's business however i think it was pretty unavoidable, they HAD to have games out quickly, unfinished or not.

Its all a question of doing what you can with what you've got. And the vast majority of Atari's developers didn't have a whole lot.
