Need help with Atari 65 XE

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help me. I pick up a Atari 65 XE with cassette deck and all leads and manuals with a few games for £3 GBP. It is in mint condition and the basic works fine. However when I used the cload command to load a game, it goes so far and then i get an error 21 on most, or I get a error 140 on 1 or 2 games.

Would this be a faulty game due to the age, the cassette deck need a clean or whatever. Any help is appreciated as I don't know much about these 8 bit computer atari's and would love to get it working if possible as I have never seen one before working or a machine until now. Thanks.

I suspect that your cassettes are in poor condition, but it could just be that the cassette deck is in need of a clean. The cassette deck could also have more serious problems, but it's worth trying other cassettes and cleaning first, before assuming the worst.

It's possible to recreate cassettes from .cas images (such as those on atarimania.com) by using the cas2wav utility. Of course, that's assuming that the games have already been imaged somewhere.

Do you have a list of the cassette titles?

Also, you will still be able to use cartridge-based games, and it's quite possible that other cassettes will work OK.

What Games are you trying to load?

If they are purchased games chance are you do not need the Cload. Turn on the 65 holding down the start button and then press play on the cassette then hit return to start loading

Good call, I missed the CLOAD reference in the OP.

Actually, for most commercial games, you'll have to hold down both the Start and Option keys, to disable the onboard BASIC interpreter. Most games require it to be disabled.
