Bill Brasky #1 Posted July 20, 2006 (edited) I hate them. They can't make me give up my beloved VHS tapes. Who would want that anyway? VHS looks just fine on my 19" Zenith COLOR TV. Yeah, you read that right, color. Edited July 20, 2006 by Bill Brasky

AtariJr #3 Posted July 20, 2006 (edited) im no media lover or anything, but even i have virtually deserted VHS tapes. What is the point... they fade away after time, they make you hit a rewind button (bastards lol), you cant put it near a magnet (im 65% magnet), and dvds arent expensive anymore so its not like your really saving money... that and the fact that most movies dont even have vhs counterparts anymore i dont think. JB #4 Posted July 20, 2006 Are we talking DivX the long-dead pseudo-rental DVD format, or DivX the popular PC codec?
Lemmi #5 Posted July 20, 2006 Are we talking DivX the long-dead pseudo-rental DVD format, or DivX the popular PC codec? probably the dead rental version, it looks like he is stuck in the past i love my philips 642 dvd player it plays almost anything i put in it, even a few wmv files and the files look good on my 27" Samsung color TV

Room 34 #8 Posted July 21, 2006 I just dug out some old VHS tapes from the basement, and for the first time I really did notice a deterioration in the quality... not the lack of quality vs. DVD, but the fact that the tapes really played poorly, much worse than they used to. (And it's not from overplaying, like the old tapes we'd watch in junior high where there was always that band at the top of the picture that was all bent and discolored... it's simply from age, sitting in a box in the basement for a decade.) Bill Brasky #9 Posted July 21, 2006 Yeah, I meant Circuit City Divx. I won't upgrade to that, no way. I can watch my VHS tapes as many times as I want. I bought a DVD from Sony Studios (Road House 2) and I could not record over it. This is a Sony scam. On all of my VHS movies I can put tape over the hole and record over them if I want. See now, DVD's suck.
SteveW #10 Posted July 21, 2006 It seems so long ago when I used to see Divx movies at Circuit City. I saw some earlier in the year, at a scummy flea market. Some guy had one of the players and what looked like around 40 movies in a box. I didn't even think to ask him how much he wanted for it. I wouldn't mind picking up one just for the novelty. I wonder if the movies would even play, without being hooked up to a phone line so the company can charge you just for viewing the movie.

I wonder if the movies would even play, without being hooked up to a phone line so the company can charge you just for viewing the movie. Does anyone know the answer to this? What would happen if you plugged one into a regular DVD player now? Nothing? Bingo. The disks aren't readable unless the player calls in and gets a decryption code from the central server. I think the servers were taken down some time ago. Though they DID unlock all their disks and give everyone "free play" on them after they announced they were killing everything, so if the servers are still up, you can watch the movies. BTW, what's going to happen when you wear out the tape and/or the VHS tape player?

JB #22 Posted July 22, 2006 You know what's REALLY crap? Color TVs. Stupid corporations forced that one down our throats. The black and white sets were clearer, more efficient, and cheaper! We didn't even WANT color! Freaking Sony...

We didn't even WANT color! Freaking Sony... Yeah man! And what's with all this Dolby and DTS surround sound? It sounds just spectacular in glorious mono on my Zenith COLOR TV, 19 inches BABY! This is another Sony scam!11!1 They are trying to force us to re-buy all of our movies in surround sound format. You won't be able to listen to them with your regular TV anymore. I won't do it!! What's the deal with all these new game consoles and their newfangled S-video and component cables. Give me a good ol RF hookup thank you very much. We don't all have 52" Plasma HDTV's. This is just Sony trying to get us to buy their plasma TV's.
Jess Ragan #25 Posted July 22, 2006 I for one love throwing money at unproven, exorbitantly expensive technology. I can never have enough doorstops, and those UMD films make really great coasters for shot glasses! JR
