pocketmego #1 Posted July 22, 2006 Hi, I'm still new here, but once I went through this site a thought occured to me. The comics that DC did for some of the Atari release games were actually pretty interesting for giving unique background for the games. Yar's Revenge especially makes much more sense with the included comic. Do you think other VCS games would have benefited from comics. i don't mean the Atari Force comics, I mean game related ones like Centipede and yars. I can already thin k of one right off the top of my head for Asteroids. -Ray
Student Driver #2 Posted July 22, 2006 As a kid, I waited and waited for Atari to package Superman with a mini-comic, and was disappointed no one had the foresight to do one. (Maybe they thought a comic book edition would be unfair to prior customers who'd gotten a comic-free edition?) Parker Bros. would have also done well by packaging Spider-Man with one. I think most of the adventure games would have benefitted from a comic; the game designers were obviously at pains to create "worlds" with recognizable locations and objects; a comic book to expand on Haunted House, Adventure, RotLA, or ET would have been nice. (And in the case of ET, maybe more kids would have read the comic than the instructions, and could have picked up on things like how to get out of the pit.) I never even thought of Haunted House or Adventure, but they REALLY could have used some backstory to flesh them out. I mean these days kids have full CGI intros in games , we had to rely on our imaginations. -Ray

PS don't forget that " The power of He Man game from Mattel also comes with a comic book.

Though it looks like they simply packed the same comics that they packed with thetoys. Still, the idea of a fully promoting the line was there and Matell was always good for that sort of cross promotional stuff. -Ray
jboypacman #6 Posted July 23, 2006 I always thought that the comics that came with the 2600 games were cool.Thinking about it games like Haunted House and Adventure could of really used a comic to feel out the background story of them. But think about if they had done a comic for Basic Programming.lol! Student Driver #7 Posted July 23, 2006 I think a BASIC Programmic comic would be similar to those Radio Shack "Whiz Kids" comics int he 80s. Something I hadn't thought about when I suggested RotLA would have done well with a comic: at the game's publication, the comic rights to Indiana Jones were held by Marvel. Since Atari was a sister company of DC, I doubt that bit of sublicensing could have been done. (This *does* make me wonder why Atari didn't do more with Warner properties... where was Batman?) I'm kind of surprised no homebrewer has done a comic yet. (Heck, do the instructions as a comic, if coming up with a related story is too much. For some reason I see an instructions-comic being hosted by Randal and Dante from Clerks.) Surely there are some talented artists here on AA that would volunteer comic art for a promo cart? Vic George 2K3 #8 Posted July 24, 2006 BASIC Programming and a pair of keyboard controllers -- what a sad waste of bucks for that day. A Timex/Sinclair 1000 and some programming books were much more entertaining than that. I would rather imagine pack-in comics for each of Coleco's 2600 game translations. Comics to go with Donkey kong, DK Jr, and Mario Brothers. It would have been an interesting estableshment of history prior to the debuts of these characters on the NES. -Ray
