I hate battery backup!

Recommended Posts

I loaded up my Tron 2.0 on my GBA this morning, and what do I find? All my games were deleted! So I start the thing up again, and give it another shot. I make sure I save it, turn it off, and an hour later.. Games all gone again..

And of course the games are sealed with the big N's proprietary screwdriver. :( :x

Your aware that the special screwdriver to open the games is actually cheaper than the battery you'll have to buy to make the save function work. :P

Anyhow, I don't remember if it's the 3.8 or 4.2 security bit, but one of those will work for you, and if you have to go the Ebay rout, won't cost over $5 to get. Or you can take the game to your local watch store and get them to replace the battery, most of them will have the bit.

I hate the battery backups in Sega hardware. The Dreamcast's isn't replaceable, which makes me mad. At least the ones inside the VMU are, but they get run down so fast it's not worth replacing them. At least I can replace the one inside the Saturn, but having to reset the clock and everything when I start the DC up is annoying.

Artlover knows how to replace the DC's internal battery. He talked about replacing it with a non rechargeable type, which makes far more sense to use in a battery backup system than a NiCd cell that will die in three weeks.

Who uses the portable game feature on the VMU anyway? The VMU uses flash RAM anyway, and the batteries are there solely for powering it outside of the controller. Therefore, they are almost completely unnecessary.

Battery backed games are easy to fix. You'll need more than the special screwdriver to do it, though. Some smaller pairs of diagnoal cutters can pull those proprietary screws, but you need a battery with solder tabs attatched to it, and that's why I take mine to a battery shop that can attatch those tabs.

Once I open the carts, Batteries Plus charges $4 to replace the battery. Cheap, simple, and done.

Actually, the VMU will still save data without the battery back up. I won't save certain things like the Chao thing you get of Sonic, but unless you really want to play the mini game, then it's not important anyways.

CR2032 was a poor choice IMO, since it's one of the more expensive replaceable batteries out there. The G13's are far cheaper, and unless the controller's simply built wrong, they should be recharged each time the system's on.

As for carts, I've rarely taken any apart, but most I've done, have a standard button cell, just with a cage over it which useually the battery can be pushed out of, but sometimes needs resoldered.

Personally, if I ever need to replace a cart battery, I intend to replace the legs with a standard battery socket instead of spending extra time grabbing a legged battery(I recognize there might be space issues in Gameboy carts, but bah humbug).
