hbomb #1 Posted July 27, 2006 Does anyone know if the original cardboard insert that goes in the Atari box for a heavy sixer was originally just a rectangular tray type of cardboard with no fold over top? The ones I've seen on later models and on the Sears heavy had a flap over piece over the console, but the one I have now is just rectangular with no fold over piece. Also, how can one tell if the joysticks that I have are the actual originals or if they were purchased seperately at a later date? These questions may sound trivial, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks! A.J. Franzman #2 Posted July 27, 2006 (edited) There's really no way to be sure about the sticks, but if they're both CX-10s and both have the same styles of circuit boards, cables and other internal parts, odds are at least fairly good that they were originally sold together. Whether they originally came with the console you have is impossible to know, but if they're not a matched pair, you can be sure that at least one of them didn't. Also, it seems from some posts here that some late-production heavy sixers came with CX-40 sticks instead of the spring-loaded CX-10s, so if your sixer has a '78 style box and a matched pair of CX-40s, there's also some chance that they are the original sticks. pocketmego #3 Posted July 28, 2006 OK, it may be a Noob question, but i don't care...cause I gotta know. What is a Heavy Sixer and why are they called that? Thanks -Ray

A.J. Franzman #5 Posted July 29, 2006 (edited) And please ignore where that page or anyone else calls it the "Sunnyvale Edition"; that's a red herring. Heavy sixers and light sixers (the second style in the table) were made in both Sunnyvale and Taiwan. Also, in the future please use the forum search first - similar questions have been answered many times before. That's why they're called "Noob questions", and why so many Noobs are in my ignore list. Edited July 29, 2006 by A.J. Franzman
hbomb #6 Posted July 29, 2006 For the record, I believe my joysticks that came with my heavy are CX-40's. I took them apart to see if they were imprinted with the model number but I found nothing but springs and cords.
A.J. Franzman #7 Posted July 29, 2006 (edited) For the record, I believe my joysticks that came with my heavy are CX-40's. I took them apart to see if they were imprinted with the model number but I found nothing but springs and cords. One spring in each, or five? The original CX-10 style have five. There are a few differences visible from the outside too. CX-10s do not have the word "TOP" in the orange ring around the stick, the fire button protrudes a bit further, and the screw heads in the bottom are very near the surface instead of being deeply recessed. Only CX-10s have the hexagonal recess at the top of the stick, which originally held a metal "hex disc" with either the Atari logo or the word "SEARS" printed on it. Most of those discs have long since fallen off and become lost. Finally, the major difference which affects gameplay, is that the CX-10 sticks have considerable "overtravel" due to the extra springs, while CX-40 sticks stop (or are supposed to stop) moving as soon as the electrical contact is made. Someone only familiar with CX-40s, who handles a CX-10 might think it was broken; in fact there have been reports of people who have thrown them out untested based on that assumption, only to discover later what they had. Thanks -Ray Actually, I do agree with AJ telling you to use the search engine. You get this offense for free. Still, though, don't hesitate to ask a question that's not found with a search of the forums. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
