Measuring voltages

I got my voltage meter today and have been testing voltages on my power supply. I checked the AC voltage to make sure 120V was getting into the power supply and it looked fine. I also tested the isolation transformer for the 120V and that checked out fine (on both top and bottom). When it came to the +5 and +12, I had to trace the wires from the JAMMA harness down to the power supply, since they all ran into a 9pin molex. I tried every combination with the leads of my tester, but I didn't get any DC voltage coming out of the power supply so I imagine that answers the question of if it's a power supply issue.

 

I do have one question though. How do I measure the voltage getting into the monitor? I wanted to make sure that the monitor was receiving the right voltage (I assume 120V AC). Where should I run my tester leads to get a reading? Also, should I test the fuse on the monitor chassis? How do I test that, and what voltage am I looking for?

Well, it depends if it's a nintendo game or not. Typically, all voltages to the mintor/isolation transformer are 120V. The game voltages should be tested off the power supply and off the pcb test points. They are measured in DC. Should be like 5.25 volts. What game is it?

Ok. So after much research and discussion I was convinced that the power supply was dead in my 4 player TMNT machine. I wasn't able to get any DV voltage readings from it so I found an old AT power supply and cliped the molexes and soldered the wires into the 9pin molex (which I clipped) of my dead power supply. I plugged it in, turned it on and TA DA!! The game powered up, the coin doors lit up and I could hear the game rolling. GREAT!

 

So I grabbed another power cord and plugged in the dead power supply (the 120VAC still worked). I turned that on as well and the marquee lit up, but no monitor! The monitor just wouldn't turn on! I took my voltage meter and I was able to read 120VAC getting to the monitor. A 400V cap read right on 400V. And I checked the fuse and that read just fine. I don't get it...why isn't my monitor coming on? It's a 25" 8 Liners that I got about 18 months ago.
