pocketmego #1 Posted August 4, 2006 I haven't played Superman on the 2600 in YEARS. So I had forgotten that it is the only Superman game EVER to actually make the character invulnerable. Sure he could loose his strength and powers by way of Kryptonite. But, he still couldn't be killed and that is very cool. So many games that would feature the character later just treated him like an average video game character. I also like the fact that game FEELS very much like a 70's Julie Schwartz Superman story. None of the nonsense associated with the character these days. -Ray
shadow460 #2 Posted August 4, 2006 Invincibility was what attracted mt ot some other games, like Pole Position and Pitfall II. You still incur penalties for "dying", but you can keep playing the game until you finish it. Superman seems to have just the right amount of cheesiness to it to make it credible. Lord Thag #3 Posted August 4, 2006 While I'm not much of a Superman fan, I always did like the 2600 version. It's weird, abstract, and fun in a weird, abstract kinda way
Christophero Sly #4 Posted August 4, 2006 Superman is one of my favorite VCS games. It's vastly underated. It has a large, dynamic, and non-linear playworld. It has warp screens, numerous NPC's to interact with, and, best of all, it's timed, which sends it's replay value through the roof. The cinematics in the opening scene is a neat touch too. Could't agree more. Every session of gaming for me always includes at least one game of Superman. It's one of the first if not THE first game that ran a storyline with a beginnig, middle, and end.....Also, it still has the 'jump' factor for me...running into a screen with the blue 'fast' kryptonite right on top of me still makes me jump a little inside to this day! Awsome game all around.
jaybird3rd #6 Posted August 5, 2006 Something else: it was one of the few (only?) superhero games that actually used the alter-ego aspect of the main character. Other games would let you play as the Incredible Hulk but never Dr. Banner, or as Wonder Woman but never Diana Prince. In 2600 Superman, you got to be Superman AND Clark Kent, and each one had a role in winning the game.
Jack Spencer Jr #7 Posted August 5, 2006 I like 2600 Superman, too. It's a lot like Adventure, yet different It's kind of a shame that Gottlieb didn't get the Superman liscence nor produce the retooled game concept Argus. It also had the invulnerable hero thing going on and probably would have been a hit if it was a Superman game.
Atari Dogs #8 Posted August 5, 2006 I never could figure out how to play. You try to keep the bad guys from blowing something up right? I suppose this is a game that you need the manual for. Any I traded it away over 20 years ago.
pocketmego #9 Posted August 5, 2006 I never could figure out how to play. You try to keep the bad guys from blowing something up right? I suppose this is a game that you need the manual for. Any I traded it away over 20 years ago. I was a bit confused as well, until I read the Atari Age re-print manual on the site. Then it made perfect sense. It also helps if you consider it as Superman prior to 1986, in which the rules were certainly different for the character than they are today. Basically you start the game as Clark and walk over in time to see the crooks and Luthor blow up the bridge. Then you need to catch all the crooks and Luthor and reasemble the bridge. Once you do all that you have to become Clark and ge tthe story to the Dailey planet. If any of Luthor's Kryptonite satelites nail you, you loose your power of flight and super strength. You can only recoup that power by finding and touching Lois Lane (kind of Freaudian actually). So, it looks a lot more complex than it is. -Ray
Godzilla #10 Posted August 9, 2006 was 2600 supes the first home video game with a cinematic? certainley the first that let you look off in the distance (used viewing,) as a game feature (kinda like the view/zoom/sniper modes of today,) I've always loved this game and still do to this day. Especially taken in context of it's time, it's amazing. Also, I agree, how nice is it to have a superman game where he really is super :-)

JacobZu7zu7 #12 Posted August 12, 2006 Yes, Superman is a good game for how old it is. Like '25' years now. Most games at that time were like Slot Racers. I can't really see, how someone would like Adventure but not the Superman 2600 game. Like Jack said, its alike, but different.
pocketmego #13 Posted August 13, 2006 Yes, Superman is a good game for how old it is. Like '25' years now. Most games at that time were like Slot Racers. I can't really see, how someone would like Adventure but not the Superman 2600 game. Like Jack said, its alike, but different. I played through bthe entire mission today. The level one version anyway. For what it is, it is a very interesting game in that it really is designed for multiple objectives. In an age where most games had one goal, you had to complete three in order to beat Superman. Plus it gave you something for winning, basically when you entered the Dailey Planet to finish your story the game gives a tone that says you won and trhen you are treated to Clark kent being whisked through every screen in the game. Silly sure, but it was a precurser to the ending cinemas of the NES era. In terms of Cinematics, yes, I think Superman was the first one. -Ray
