pocketmego #1 Posted August 7, 2006 After much trial and tribulation I finally got a working Pitfall 2 yesterday! When I was growing up I never knew they had released Pitfall 2 on the Atari as I had already made the jump to commodore when it came out. I played PF2 like a mad man on my C64, though. So when I discovered the existence of the thing I wanted it, only to loose the few E-Bay auctions I've seen it on, buy it from a shop only to find it Bit rotted to nothing... Finally I found it at a shop yesterday and feared it wasn't working again. But, a little cart claeaning and it sinbgs like new. I love this game and in many ways I owe my possesion of it to you guys and your great reviews of it. Thanks -Ray
Foxsolo2000 #2 Posted August 7, 2006 I've noticed that Pitfall 2 often failed to work the first time you plugged it in. I had 5 at one time and each one took some cleaning to get them to work but the rest of the Activision range worked perfectly everytime. Anyone got any therioes why this particular cart is so prone to getting dirty?
D.Yancey #3 Posted August 7, 2006 It draws more juice, so it requires a better contact to fire-up, I guess. I often have difficulties w/ other Activision carts too. I never noticed Pitfall II to be excessively worse.

shadow460 #5 Posted August 7, 2006 If it's of any consolation, my own Pitfall II is pretty cruddy looking.

Lord Thag #7 Posted August 7, 2006 Mine is cruddy looking too. It's my original game from xmas back in 85 or so. Played it to death, that's for sure. I can just about beat it one one guy anymore too. It's strange, but I've only ever seen one copy in the wild (which i gave to a fellow friend and collector). It's not very common around here apparently. godzillajoe #8 Posted August 7, 2006 Will Pitfall II work on a 7800?
Inky #9 Posted August 7, 2006 Will Pitfall II work on a 7800? Depends on the 7800. It works on mine, but mine is an early original WB -era 7800. The Tramiel era ones are more iffy.

It's not very common around here apparently. I don't know how common it is in the wild here either. There was the one that just wasn't ever going to work and the one I bought and cleaned until it did work. I notice later Atari games lack the dust shields, or maybe its just third party games that do, but in any event, this is the source of a lot of that crud. The problem with the first unplayable copy I got was that it was kept ina Flea Market in one of those backroom shops with no air conditioning. All of his electronics were iffy and at leasty 3 of the six games I bought from him failed to work. The heat is just No good for him. That is why I passed on his offer to get me a Commodore 64, I can just imagine an entire system under those conditions. -Ray

Rik #12 Posted August 9, 2006 I remember when i first got PITFALL 2,the first thing that blew me away was the MUSIC!,3 part harmonys!THAT TIME IN MY LIFE WAS PRICELESS,i wish i could relive it!!!!!!!!!,i thought it was the best thing at that time,i couldnt believe that they were able to program that on the 2600,now i know it was because of a special chip added in the cart itself that gave it a boost. gamme #14 Posted August 10, 2006 Yeah, Pitfall II is a pain to get working for me as well. I love the music. I noticed that if you play the game for a long time after having no points the music starts to get this horrible droning sound to it. I took it as the game giving me a hint to either get some gold or turn off the dang thing.

I could barely get past the first bird that flies at you in the Commodore version. -Ray
gamme #16 Posted August 10, 2006 Well I decided to go ahead and beat this thing...boy was I in trouble not waiting for the balloons to come by....I knew there was something I was missing. I was up until about 6 A.M. trying to figure out how to get to that diamond...I won't ruin the secret incase there are a few here who still can't figure out how to get to the diamond. Rik #17 Posted August 11, 2006 (edited) The satisfaction i got when i successfully completed pitfall 2 with a perfect score, was indescribable!!!!!!!!!!!!!I,ve beat the game quite a few times on the 2600 version,i'll try to do the same on the CV and INTV version, that will keep me busy for a while. The hardest part of beating this game is that there is no PAUSE button,so if i had to go to washroom ,I had to place harry in a safe positon, couldnt do that with pitfall 1 though, since of course its timed.Even having to scratch an itch anywhere on your body would cause you to die or lose time. Not sure how you do it, but I find that running straight at the bats for as close as I can get to them, and then doing a quick backstep and step forward is the best way to get by the bats. Also, hiding in the holes and waiting for a bat to go by and then quickly jumping out as soon as it goes by is another good trick. I may try for a high score at some point.
