The Best Arcade port to the 2600...

Recommended Posts

I already know this has been asked before, but I'll post it as a new topic again anyway...

What do you all think was the 2600 best Arcade port, translation, whatever?

I have to say Gyruss and Q*bert are neck and neck for me on this one. Both are terrific translations graphically and both maintain the many of the same gameplay elements as their Arcade counterparts. Q*bert especially seems to have retained almost every single element from the arcade game. Plus it plays with very little flicker and is just as addiciting as the arcade machine.

Gyruss is missing quite a few of the arcade elements, most notably the boss battles. But, it took guts to even attempt to do this game on the 2600. however it plays with a lot of the same intensity and the basic FUn Factor of what makes Gyruss great is still there.

Coming up third for me would be Mario Bros. Which, would come REAL close to being 1st, but a lack of a few elements, most notably not being able to jump ON the Power Button is a rough spot in the game.

What do you you ladies and gentlemen think?

for me..it would be Moon Patrol as being high up there. Sure the graphics aren't quite the same...but all the arcade elements are there minus the diagnal bolders...but missles...land minds...all the enemies, and the gameplay is still 100% intact.

Parker Brothers did a great job mostly - Frogger was very faithful too, and Popeye kept the basic gameplay intact. Atari delivered with Phoenix, Ms. Pac and others - can't pick just one.

Pac-Man, no doubt about it.

Oh hell. That was the standardized response to the wrong question.

Bump And Jump is right up there

Joust, Moon Patrol, Jungle Hunt, Frogger

What are the "boss battles" in Gyruss? Am I getting senile?

Something added for the NES version of the game. There are no boss battles in the arcade version.

It seems NES often did that with games. I guess "boss" guys were the big thing back then and every game needed one.

No, just no. Gyruss is an updated version of the game rather than a port of the original. Neither updates nor bosses were something limited to the NES. There were plenty of arcade games like Blasteroids, Time Pilot '84, Galaga '88, etc. Also, the NES has plenty of non-enhanced ports like Pac-Man, Burgertime, Xevious, Galaga, Dig Dug (Japan only), Galaxian (Japan only), Dig Dug II, Elevator Action, Joust, Millipede, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Popeye, etc.

My favorite arcade ports on the 2600 are Crystal Castles, Jr. Pac-Man, Vanguard, Jungle Hunt, Moon Patrol, Reactor, Breakout, Super Breakout, Millipede, Centipede, Gravitar, and Joust.

I'm impressed at how the 2600 was able to handle Vanguard with most of the elements from the arcade intact. The diagonal and one horizonatal section were changed to vertical, but it's still impressive how the game has some horizontal sections and multiple screens.

Crystal Castles also impresses me. The stages were simplified due to the isometric perspective used in the arcade, but I'm amazed at how much of the arcade elements are intact. Popping those catipiller guys is a blast!

Defender 2 is awesome, the best for me.

And apart from what has been mentioned Kung-fu Master is a great conversion too.

My memory isn't what it used to be either. I just got that Konami televisioon Games stick they put Gyruss on and I assumed it was the old Arcade game. The boss battles seemed a bit out of place for me, but I figured it was just my bad memory.

But, apparently they put the NES version on the stick.

So I guess no boss battles then. :D

Yup. The 2600 version is quite a nifty port. It doesn't look nearly as good as the arcade, but most of the gameplay is intact, even the bonus rounds. Too bad it's so rare. I was surprised to see the arcade machine at Hershey Park. That game rocks!

Reading this post reminds me how many good arcade conversions landed on the 2600. Incredible when you think about how much less the 2600 programmers had to work with!

Thanks for the link, apparently even the arcade machine is kind of rare.

Absoultely. I mean the 2600 is to me the greatest game machine of all time. Not because it had the best graphics, or the best anything really. But, what it did have was just awesome titles across the board. GREAT original material, GREAT ports, and recently some GREAT Homebrews.

The 2600 defintely deserved to be the king of it's era.
