jboypacman's Blog - Understanding Homebrew Games

Recommended Posts

A while back i had my best friend over not long after i had gotten back into the Atari 2600.I had purchased a few Homebrew games from AtariAge and was excited to show them to him.I didnt get the reaction from him that i thought i would."These are not real Atari games!"he said in a loud tone.I said"Sure they are, they were made buy Atari fans for the Atari".I told him.I then pulled out the green sheet flyer that comes with any homebrew game you order from AtariAge and let him read it.Guess what he still doesnt get Homebrew games. To him they are ripoffs and not the real deal. Now to me Homebrew games be it for any of the classic videogame systems are more than the "Real Deal."These are true games for the 2600,5200,7800,Colecovision,or even the Vectrex because they were made by the fans for the fans.Am more excited about a new release on these systems than any new release on the PS2,X-box,Gamecube,or X-Box 360.Give me Hunchy 2 or Gunfight over Jax or Gun anyday. If i had extra money to go out and buy a X-box360 it just wouldnt happen. With that money i could really built up my small collection of classic games and systems.Maybe am a little crazy but am just so tired of the same garbage that they are pumping out on the newer game systems.Nintendo is the only company that i can see is trying to keep gaming exciting by trying to do something diffrent than Sony or Microsoft. But thats only because they can no longer compete on the level that the other companies are at.So the point i was trying to get at with my Best Friend was that just because the Homebrew games were not made by Atari or any other 3rd party company like Activision.Doesnt make them some cheap knock-off.They are more real than anything that Sony or MicroSoft or even Nintendo has or will put out. Why?Because these games were made with love and with respect to now not long dead videogame systems.Classic gaming is alive and very well.So i will keep on not only buying orginal Atari and Colecovision games but keep buying Homebrewed Atari and Colecovision games as well. Now if everyone will excuse me but i got that Homebrewed copy of SeaWolf to play."Buy and Play Atari HomeBrew Games Today."
