Most People are clueless as to what the 2600 was actually capable of..

Recommended Posts

I was buzzing around You Tube, as I am apt to do, and I found this "2600" Super Mario Brothers Hack...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVANvEwj1Is

The guy who editied this thing seems to really believe that a game like this could actually have been done on the 2600. When clearly it is just a HACK of the NES game with blocky looking graphics.

Ignoring things like smooth scrolling and no flicker, the 2600 certainly couldn't have handled that music. It really annoys me when people just think of the Atari as a bunch of blocky low rez graphics and totally miss what the system did, IT DID GREAT!

OK. We admit it. We're fixing stuff, but we'll be up soon.

In the meantime, please enjoy a layman's explanation of our website...

*sigh* better luck next time.

Well... I dunno. Don't get confused with the maker of that hack which was done years ago vs. the guy who uploaded that video. :P I think is a nifty hack by the way... albeit somewhat limited. Of course it can't be done on a real 2600 (although the guy who uploaded the vid sounded like he thought it would), but that doesn't take anything away from it I think.

I mean did you think the 2600 hacks on Mame were any less cool? :) I personally love the "2600" hack of MsPacman and Pacman. They got all the arcade gameplay with the 2600 looks :D

Those Pac images are V ERY cool. I guess if it's done as an homage with the understanding that they are cool translations of existing games made to resemble the graphical style of the 2600, and everyone knows this. Then, yeah, that is cool. I especially like the names of the ghosts Flickery, Sluggish...etc. That is pretty funny.

Apparently the guy who uploaded the video was the only one that thought you could get a 2600 to do that.

thats awesome, im gunna have to give that a shot. and i do believe the 2600 can do something like the nes rom hack. just give the homebrewers time, they'll figure it out (heck who would have thought the 2600 could do bitmaps until adavie pulled that off, or the boulder dash he's doin...)

I thionk he sold the 2600 a bit short with the sprites I mean look at the ones in the original Mario Bros for the VCS. The higher res writing just looks stupid too and couldn't be done.

You make a very solid point. Hell, until I played the thing, I never would havce thought ANY versionf Jetpac was possible. The one on the minicart might be different, but MAN is it addictive...Just like the original!

That is actually true. The Sprites of Mario and Luigi wouldn't look like walking cubes. They would look not unlike they did in mario Brothers I'm sure.

I wonder if Coleco would have been the ones to put out 2600 SMS?

:D

I tell ya that infuriates me!!!

No other hobby has so much disrespect thrown at its heritage like this one. If someone likes baseball, they never say things like how sucky those old baseball games were that were only shown in black and white.

It's ridiculous.

Would be cool to see someone with a better understanding of 2600 graphics to do a "real" 2600-style SMB hack, as opposed to one where everything looks the same, but blockier.

Actually, I thought the hack was pretty cool looking... not as what the 2600 could do , but in terms of duplicating how animators and all think games looked, kind of like the old Activision coverart...

Can anyone explain why a SMB clone couldn't be done on the VCS? So maybe they couldn't do the scrolling, but why not flick screen like SMB Special by Hudson on the Japanese computer systems? As for the text, big deal...just make it bigger.

As for the sound, maybe a pokey chip or Pitfall II chip (or both, if possible) could facilitate that?

Hell, I'd take it on the 5200 or 7800, if not the 2600!
