sega outrun questions

Recommended Posts

i recently purchased an upright sega outrun. it seems to be in excellent shape, i had been looking for a while, and got a great deal on this one. i have a few questions though, that i am unable to find answers for. :

1. when i unplug the game i am losing all my high scores. there are some high scores saved, but they seem to be from the "factory." it is my impression that the deluxe upright does not have the suicide battery, so i dont think its a battery issue. any ideas?

2. the "shaking steering wheel effect" was disconnected when i got it, i hooked it back up, but it shakes the hell out of the cab. is this normal, or is there an adjustment i can make? i like the effect, but its brutal right now.

anyway, thats it for now. if someone is knowledgeable about the game, i have a couple of other questions id like to ask...

I own a few Coin-op's and from my expierence when somethings unplugged upon purchase they usually did it for a reason, sure it might have rattled loose on it's own but I doubt it. As for the high scores you probably lack the save battery back up required for this or it's broken or something. Some older games didn't come with it but I'm not sure about Outrun. They do sell kits you can install for some games that will save high scores but again I'm not sure for Outrun. :?:

Nice pickup. I used to work in an amusement park and I actually almost bought an Out Run machine they had there.

As far as a suicide battery, some Out Run machines have them and some don't. I believe the first machines manufactured lack them and the later manufactures contain them. I don't think it has anything to do with the deluxe/standard/upright variations, but I could be wrong. Whatever the case may be, actual suicide batteries on Sega boards usually affect the game sound or the game as a whole, I don't believe the high scores would be affected...you would definitely know if you had a dead suicide battery. The high scores may indeed have their own battery, nonetheless. Check the game's manual (if you have access to one). Are you sure the high scores are saved in the first place?

Regarding the shaking of the steering wheel, it is fairly turbulent. I don't know if you are experiencing anything beyond what is normal. If you don't have the game's manual, you should probably get one, that's my best advice. Good luck.

only turbo outruns have the suicde battery on them. Regular outrun does not. I don't think the game saves high scores.

Shaker motor is quite violent on the upright. If it feels like its going to rip the steering wheel out of your hand, thats about normal.
